Welcome everyone.
Today we're going to explore a concept from Buddhism.
It's a kind of loving-kindness called equanimity.
It's all about balance.
So get comfortable sitting or lying down.
Close your eyes and take a little equanimity journey with me.
Beautiful.
Take a few deep breaths and let the inhale and exhale create a sense of relaxation in your body,
Letting go.
When we move into a feeling of equanimity,
It allows our mind to be balanced and steady and calm.
I want you to imagine for a moment that you are a well-constructed boat.
Your bow from head to tail of the boat.
Everything about the boat is really well-constructed.
It's unsinkable and steady.
No matter how high the waves might rise or how strong the wind may blow,
The boat remains steady.
Like the boat,
You have emotions.
Emotions that may rise,
The boat remains steady.
But like the boat,
We are able to stay steady through the storm.
Tune into the rhythm of your breath.
Let's be right here,
Right now.
Equanimity helps us navigate life's ups and downs with grace and stability.
When we feel balanced,
We are better able to face challenges without getting overwhelmed.
We can enjoy pleasures without being overly attached.
It gives us the strength to remain calm and composed regardless of what's happening around us.
Doesn't that sound lovely?
As you breathe in,
Say silently to yourself,
Breathing in,
I am calm.
And as you breathe out,
Breathing out,
I'm steady.
Let's do this a few times together.
Breathing in,
I'm calm.
Breathing out,
I'm steady.
Breathing in,
I'm calm.
Breathing out,
I am steady.
Breathing in,
Calm.
Breathing out,
Steady.
Breathing in,
Calm.
Breathing out,
Steady.
Do you feel that calmness spreading throughout your body?
Oh,
I really hope so.
As you continue to breathe,
Imagine with each inhale,
You are drawing in this calm,
Healing energy.
Feel it fill you up with that breath.
And then with each exhale,
Imagine releasing any tension or stress.
Let's just enjoy that for a moment.
Breathing in,
Calm.
Exhaling your tension.
In calm,
Exhaling the tension,
Steady.
Now,
Think about a time in your life when you felt truly balanced and peaceful.
Maybe it was a moment in nature,
Quiet time at home.
Maybe it was just a moment,
Or maybe it was a longer stretch of time in your life.
Can you connect with that feeling as you remember?
Imagine those moments in detail.
It was in nature,
Picture the scenery around you,
The trees,
The sky,
The gentle breeze.
Hear the sounds,
Perhaps the rustle of leaves or the chirping of birds.
Feel the ground beneath you.
Let the sensory details bring you fully into that memory.
Feel the warmth and sense of safety.
Notice the lighting,
Favorite scent of the air.
Wherever you are in this peaceful moment,
Whatever you're remembering about yourself during this time of balance and equanimity.
Say yourself,
Breathing in,
I remember peace.
Breathing out,
I feel balance.
Breathing in,
I remember peace.
Breathing out,
I feel balance.
Breathing in,
I remember peace.
Breathing out,
I feel balance.
Breathing in,
I remember peace.
Breathing out,
I feel balance.
Breathing in,
I remember peace.
Breathing out,
I feel balance.
Remember how that felt,
How your mind was clear and your heart was at ease.
This is the essence of equanimity.
Hold on to this feeling,
Letting it wash over you,
Bringing a deeper sense of calm and balance.
Allow yourself to bask in this sensation.
Let it move into every part of your being,
Equanimity.
Stay in that beautiful memory,
That memory of a time where you felt that peace,
That equanimity,
That balance.
Let it anchor you into a state of deep equanimity.
Life is so full of unpredictable events.
Sometimes things go our way and sometimes they don't.
Equanimity teaches us to accept both with an open heart.
We don't cling to the good times and we don't resist the bad times.
We stay centered,
Knowing that both are part of us.
Stay centered,
Knowing that both are part of our journey.
Now let's practice equanimity into a challenging situation.
Imagine a situation that usually unsettles you.
Maybe it's a stressful meeting,
A difficult conversation,
Or a personal challenge.
Visualize it clearly.
As you do,
Bring your awareness back to your breath.
Let that steadiness and calmness keep growing within you.
With each breath as you imagine the challenge,
Remind yourself,
I can handle this.
I am balanced.
I am calm.
I can handle this.
I am balanced.
I am calm.
Picture yourself responding to this situation with a steady hand and a peaceful heart.
Spend a few moments here practicing this response.
If your mind wanders,
Gently bring it back to your breath.
Remember,
Equanimity isn't about perfection.
It's about practice.
It's about returning to that place of balance again and again.
And again.
Equanimity also means understanding that everyone around us is going through their own waves,
Their own storms.
Like us,
They may have their highs and lows.
Their boats may not be built as sturdy and steady as ours.
This understanding helps us to be compassionate and kind,
Even when faced with difficult people or situations.
As we wrap up,
Take a moment to feel gratitude for this practice,
For your innate ability to return to balance,
No matter what life throws your way.
Gratitude for the strength to stay calm and steady.
To develop your faith and your ability to stay strong and calm and steady.
Take a few more deep breaths.
Feeling that gratitude in your heart.
Take one last deep breath in,
With a very slow exhale.
And gently open your eyes,
Bringing this sense of equanimity with you.
Carry it into your dreams tonight.
Carry it with you the rest of your week.
Always returning to those words,
Calm and balance.
Steady.
Thank you for joining me in this meditation.
Thank you for joining me in this practice.
Remember,
Equanimity is always within you,
Ready to help you stay balanced and have peace.
