Why does rest feel so difficult sometimes?
And this is something many people and many of my clients.
Ask me and they don't understand it.
For many of us rest sounds like something that we should want and find easy.
Maybe we know that we need it.
Maybe we feel exhausted,
We might even long for more space and ease.
And yet when we finally have a moment to actually slow down,
It feels really uncomfortable.
You might notice your mind becoming busier,
Emotions coming up,
You're feeling restless,
Feeling the urge to immediately do something productive.
And I get it because this was me for decades.
And it can feel confusing,
Frustrating.
But from a nervous system perspective,
There's often a reason.
If your body has spent a long time in a state of stress,
Pressure,
Responsibility.
.
.
Slowing down can feel unfamiliar.
The nervous system may have learned that staying busy,
Staying alert or constantly doing is what keeps you safe.
And this is what is driving your experience in those moments.
And the other thing is rest is not always something that is experienced as relaxing.
So sometimes it can bring you closer to feelings that you've been moving away from.
And this can lead us to wanting to escape through many behaviours that aren't actually supportive.
This doesn't mean that there's something wrong with you.
It means that your system has adapted.
Learning to rest is not just about stopping,
It's about helping the body experience a sense of calm and inner safety,
Enough that it can just slow down.
And this really does begin with small moments of pause.
A slower breath.
Feeling your feet on the ground,
Allowing yourself just one moment where you don't need to achieve anything.
Rest is something that your body needs and if you're here you might be feeling the need for it.
The good news is that with gentle practice we can begin to create a different relationship with stillness.
A relationship where rest becomes a place of connection,
Pleasure,
Rather than something uncomfortable to avoid.
