A little light can dispel a world of darkness. We need to know how to uncover our own inner light and Hannukah is the festival in which we are invited to find that light and let it shine. Join me in a soothing guided meditation which includes a powerful candle visualisation which will help you feel more relaxed, calm and brimming full of glowing light.
Transcript
As we begin this meditation,
Try to ensure that you're in a place where you won't be disturbed whether you're sitting on a chair or lying on the ground.
Try to ensure that your limbs aren't crossed and that you're not holding onto anything,
That you feel calm and comfortable.
Join me now as we embark on a journey to calm,
To serenity and most importantly for this meditation.
We go on a journey to discover our inner light,
A light that will glow out into a dark world because this is the message of the festival of Chanukah.
So first,
Let's calm our body down.
The body,
The outer layer has been likened by many Jewish mystics to a lampshade.
The thicker the lampshade,
The less light we will see.
The more that we can make that lampshade thin,
The more layers we can take away from the lampshade,
The more light will protrude.
How do we take away the layers of the lampshade?
How do we allow the light to come through by calming the body down,
Stilling the wonderful body?
So join me now as you take a big deep breath in through your nose.
Hold for a few seconds and then breathe out.
Once again breathing in through your nose,
Putting yourself with air,
Putting yourself with life and vitality and then breathing out.
Coming back to your breath is such a welcome release.
Breathing in through your nose,
Noticing the cooler air as it comes in.
Hold for a few seconds and then breathing out again.
Noticing your feet against the floor,
The sensation of your body where it makes contact with either the floor or the chair that you're on.
As you sit right now or you lie,
Be aware of the wall in front of you and the wall behind you,
The wall to the right of you and the wall to the left of you.
Breathing in now still through your nose,
Filling yourself with air,
The Jewish word for breath is nishimah as we remind ourselves is linked to the word nishama,
Soul.
We're made up of body and soul and as long as we give credence and primacy to body,
We don't get to feel connected to that inner world of soul so we're just turning down the volume.
Join me now for a quick body scan as you keep breathing in through your nose,
Starting with your right foot,
The toes of your right foot,
Touch them with your mind and send them to sleep.
Now the rest of your foot,
Your heel,
Your ankle,
Your right shin,
Your right knee and your right thigh.
Keep the breathing.
Now go to your left foot,
Your left toes,
Touch it with your mind and send it to sleep.
Rest of your foot,
Your ankle,
Your heel,
Left shin,
Up to the left knee,
Left thigh,
So both legs are warm and heavy and relaxed.
Moving up to your right hand,
Just feel your hand now feeling really warm,
Heavy and relaxed,
Your forearm,
Upper arm,
Your left hand,
Let go,
Your left forearm,
Your left upper arm,
Warm,
Heavy and relaxed and let go.
Your tummy,
Just take away all tension from your tummy.
Let it just go and dissipate.
Chest,
Your back all the way,
Each vertebrae as you move up slowly,
Your right shoulder blade,
Your left shoulder blade,
Your right shoulder and your left shoulder,
Take all the stress and tension away.
Your neck,
Your right ear,
Right side of your face,
Left ear,
The left side of your face,
Your chin,
Mouth,
Teeth,
Tongue,
Your nose,
Your eyes,
Your forehead,
Over your head,
Your entire body now is feeling warm and heavy and relaxed.
And now we're feeling a warm love and joy and respect for our body,
The vessel that carries us through this world.
The body is the vessel that takes us on our journey in physical planet earth.
We know that it's a vessel and the vessel is here in order to provide the base and support for the candle,
For the light.
The Hebrew word for light is or,
The word aura comes from it.
We believe that we are all here in this world to bring that or that light,
To shed light into darkness and sadness,
To shed compassion and friendship into a world of loneliness.
A famous mystical rabbi once said,
The lid of light can dispel a world of darkness.
We have to know just how powerful our inner light is but most of the time it's enclosed,
Most of the time it's covered,
Most of the time we're too afraid to shine our light.
So now that we've turned down the body,
We've turned down the volume,
Let's go with this visualization.
Join me now.
Imagine you're in a dark room,
Very dark room,
No light at all.
In this dark room,
I want you as you sit here now to start to peel away the layers.
I want you to start uncovering the layers around your beautiful candle that you shine within your light,
Your energy,
Your joy,
Your persona.
Start taking down the layers with each breath you bring in.
Take away another layer.
Imagine if there was a lampshade that was covered in black cloth.
With each breath in,
I want you to start imagining that you're taking away another layer of cloth.
The lampshade is getting thinner.
Take another big deep breath in.
As you breathe out,
You'll see within this room now,
There's a chink of light coming through as you start to take away each layer.
Be present.
Be in this moment.
There's nowhere to go.
Our candle needs to shine.
Our candle needs to make itself present in this world as you take away another layer now breathing into your nose.
Allow yourself amazing release as more and more layers come off the lampshade,
More and more light is now being given permission to emanate and permeate and penetrate the light now.
The light now is getting brighter.
As you now take off the lampshade,
I want you to see what it is.
It's a candle.
It's your candle.
I want you to see your flame flickering.
I want you to feel your flame flickering.
Look at the flame in your mind,
The colors,
The oranges,
The yellows flickering and dancing.
It's your candle that needs to shine.
Watch it moving,
Dancing.
Now take a bit of a step back and I want you to feel that your candle's light is starting to move out slowly,
Again,
Breathing in through your nose.
With each breath out,
I want you to imagine that the circle of light around your candle is expanding and expanding.
More light is being shed.
There's a tiny little bit of light around the candle and now it's spreading out even more.
And the darkness is being chased away in this room.
With each breath in and with each breath out,
The light spreads until now.
The darkness is nowhere to go.
The light is getting stronger and the room is getting lighter and now there's no more darkness.
I want you to see this room.
Look around.
It's full of the people you love.
It's full of the places that you want to be at.
It's full of support.
It's full of compassion.
This room is now a shining bastion.
And now the windows of this room emanate the light out to the world.
You're sitting and basking now in this beautiful light emanating out the oranges,
The yellows,
The blues,
The reds.
Glow permeates into every nook and cranny.
Nothing can stand in the way of the beams of light that are shining from your candle.
Chanukah.
Chanukah lights chase away the darkness.
Shining from one to two to three to four,
All the way to eight nights as we build and grow in our confidence to shine our light.
With each day we feel stronger.
With each day our light grows even more powerful.
Nothing can stop us.
Nothing can get in our way.
So bask in this light.
Stay present in this light.
Stay secure in this Chanukah light.
Whenever you feel ready,
You can open your eyes and glow.
And everyone you meet today,
Light their light as well.
Happy Chanukah.
