In Japa mantra meditation we use the mala as a pillar of meditation practice. Mantra recitation has been an important aspect of Yoga practice since Vedic times. It consists of repeating a mantra like Om So Ham (I Am, That I Am). Using the mantra and moving the beads through the fingers encourages the mind to gradually focus itself into the practice, reducing the incessant thoughts we face daily. Instead, the mind merges into the mantra and with time, you experience your true self.
