Sound Bath Sessions 204: Sayuri Yanagawa
I recorded Sayuri in her apartment near the Sakurajosui station. Her apartment was such a great space, as there was so much sound that created the experience. The ticking clock, rustling leaves through the open window, airplanes, and passing trains. The scene was just so grounding and familiar, with each element perfectly on cue. I love how she incorporates the outside sounds as part of her sessions. Her bowls have a very comfortable modulation tempo, not too fast, not too slow. Her playing is patient and thoughtful. For this track, Sayuri puts the bowls around the head of a person, so I put the mic in the middle of the bowl circle to immerse the listener. She slowly repeats the same sequence, allowing the sound to completely finish before playing it again. It encourages you to think deeper and really listen to the subtle differences in each sequence. I love how we are lifted up into the sound when she plays and then slowly float back down to reality.
