Thank you for downloading the presence meditation.
I'm Maggie Kelly.
I'm a life and business coach,
A meditation teacher and spiritual mentor.
I own a meditation center in San Diego,
California and another in Sedona,
Arizona.
So what exactly does it mean to be present?
Of course,
It involves a degree of our ability to remain undistracted by the chaos and other situations that show up during our day.
Perhaps even the ability to listen deeply to others,
To be aware enough of ourselves and those around us that our words and actions aren't hurtful.
Maybe for you it's just being able to maintain your composure when one of your children is acting out.
That could be what it looks like to be present,
But whatever your perception is of what it looks like to be present,
I can guarantee you it actually runs much deeper than what you think.
The idea of awakening is not about disappearing into the ether,
But rather noticing that you are present everywhere all the time.
Right this minute,
In every minute in fact.
So this meditation is designed to have you tap into your very presence that's already there and always there.
And the ultimate goal by practicing this meditation is to show you who you really are.
So if you can please set aside about 10 or 15 minutes and just settle in and I will guide us in the presence meditation.
So go ahead and close your eyes,
Take a few deep breaths.
Allow your body to settle in right where you're seated.
Reminding yourself there's no place to go.
There's nothing to do.
Just be here now.
Say to yourself,
I am present in everything I see.
Everything is visible without me.
Remaining centered with your eyes closed.
Let the sounds of your surroundings come to you for a moment and say to yourself,
I am present in everything I hear.
There's nothing to be heard without me.
Continuing with your eyes still closed and remaining centered.
Let your fingers lightly touch your skin,
Your clothing or any object nearby like the chair you might be sitting in and say to yourself,
I am present in everything I touch.
There's nothing tangible without me.
Continuing with your eyes closed and remaining centered.
Taste the inside of your mouth.
And for a moment,
Maybe mentally see a lemon being cut in half with a knife,
Squirting drops of juice.
Taste the lemon sourness and say to yourself,
I am present in everything I taste.
Nothing has a taste without me.
Continuing with your eyes closed and remaining centered.
Gently inhale the smells in your surroundings.
It doesn't matter what they are.
But say to yourself,
I am present in everything I smell.
Nothing has an odor without me.
And with your eyes still closed,
Still remaining centered,
Let your mind go wherever it wants to for the moment.
To any random sensation,
Image,
Feeling or thought really doesn't matter what it happens to be.
And say to yourself,
I am present in everything I think.
There is no mind without me.
With your eyes still closed and remaining centered for the last step,
Put your attention in the region of your heart.
With your eyes still closed,
See invisible waves pulsing out from your heart in all directions.
Follow them as far as they can take you until they fade away.
And for just a moment,
Expand how far the waves reach in all directions.
It might even help to envision the still surface of a pond.
Raindrops strikes the surface,
Sending circular waves spreading out as far as the eye can see until they subside and the pond is totally still once more.
And say to yourself,
I am present everywhere.
Nothing can be without me.
Sit in the awareness of your being,
Which is silent and unmoving and unbounded and present.
Your very being is the real you.
Whenever you feel comfortable,
Gently float your eyes open and return to the room.
Because you've practiced this a few times,
It's really simple.
You're really just tapping into your senses.
But since we're constantly shifting our identity,
The ego can't really tell you who you are.
You can only begin to notice this truth when you notice that no matter how much your life changes,
There's something that remains constant.
And that something is the self.
And it's thanks to your senses of self that you are present everywhere.
You are present in everything you see.
Try to see anything without being present.
You can't,
Right?
Or try to hear a sound without being present.
You can't do that either.
Unless you're present in everything you see,
Nothing can be seen.
It isn't your brain or your eyes that are seeing and making distinctions.
It's you.
It's your being.
Not many of us pause in the busyness of our day to notice this silent friend who accompanies us.
This is why it's so important to practice this meditation on a regular basis.
Because the meditation itself will change as you change.
And it's unlikely that it will go in a straight line either.
Because as you awaken,
You'll be confronted with ideas that will baffle your ego.
That I of you that you've identified with since you were born.
But lucky for all of us,
Waking up is real.
And it's possible for all of us.
And once you feel you are present everywhere and with everything,
You'll start to lose faith in that limited self.
You'll stop resisting and hesitating and pondering and being confused or being distracted.
You'll have an intuitive sense of yourself.
Because you are the very essence of everything that can be seen.
You are the essence of creation.
And I look forward to working with you more.
