In today’s talk, we explore Professor Steven Hayes’ metaphor about passengers on a bus. Pretending to be a bus driver can help with our resilience! That’s right. Pretending to be a bus driver can help us be brave and do things that are important to us.

When we give up on something Sometimes we feel brave.

Sometimes we feel scared.

Everyone feels brave sometimes and everyone feels scared sometimes.

Feeling brave is difficult when we need to do things that are important to us.

But I've got something that I can share with you.

I pretend to be a bus driver.

That's right,

I pretend to be a bus driver because pretending to be a bus driver helps me be brave and do things that are important to me.

Let me explain this to you.

Sometimes we can have thoughts that we don't want.

Thoughts are words or pictures in our heads.

They can be helpful or unhelpful.

Sometimes we can have feelings that we don't want.

Feelings are things in our body,

Usually our bellies,

That can feel nice or not nice.

Sometimes it might be a little feeling of fear that we notice.

And so we need to take charge of our life.

Especially when we're feeling worried or scared because these things can move us away from doing important things that we'd like to do.

So this is what I do.

I imagine that I'm driving a bus.

I am the bus driver.

Can you imagine that you are driving your bus right now?

And you are driving in the direction of your life,

Doing things that are meaningful to you.

Maybe it's an exciting adventure like going to a funfair or a water park or anything that you love.

So here you are,

Driving along the road of your life towards something you want.

As a bus driver,

You have to stop off and pick up passengers.

Can you imagine doing this?

Some of these passengers are nice.

And some are not nice.

These not nice passengers start saying unhelpful things.

So as you are driving along,

Living your life,

Some of the not nice passengers start telling you unhelpful things like,

You can't do this.

Don't go.

Life is too hard.

And things like that.

Anything that gets you to move away from what you would like to be doing.

So these passengers tell you these things to move you away from what you really want to be doing.

If you do what they say and steer away from your exciting adventure,

Then you are going in the wrong direction.

You're moving away.

Now,

Here's the thing.

Sometimes we have thoughts that tell us unhelpful things.

Sometimes we have feelings that don't feel nice.

These thoughts and feelings that we experience are like passengers on the bus of your life.

As a bus driver,

You need to stay focused on your life.

As a bus driver,

You need to stay focused on your life.

But the thoughts and feelings will be there.

And the best advice is to gently keep driving in your direction.

Taking action on things in your life.

Whilst these passengers,

These thoughts and feelings do their thing and say their thing.

Because if you steer the bus in the direction that you want to go,

Then you are taking charge of your life.

And this means you don't need to give in to those unhelpful passengers on the bus.

Does that make sense to you?

You might like to listen to this again,

Maybe with your mum,

Your dad,

Or your girlfriend.

Maybe with your mum,

Your dad,

Or your teacher to fully understand it.

But it can be helpful.

Because when you might remember that you are the bus driver of your life,

Then you get to take control of your life.

And don't get too caught up in what those passengers are saying.

Thank you for being here and I'll speak to you again soon.

Goodbye.
