Details

Spring is a perfect time to join a writing retreat in Cape May. The summer crowds have not arrived yet, so there are plenty of parking spaces, openings at restaurants, and room on the beach. The temps are starting to warm, and shops are beginning to reopen. We start each morning with meditation and journaling, followed by writing exercises and group sharing. Different tools and ideas helpful for your writing process are introduced daily, and writers practice the concepts through writing exercises. Then we workshop stories submitted by the retreat writers a month before the retreat, giving everyone ample time to provide a careful, thoughtful reading. During the workshop, we engage in lively, creative, and fun discussions and provide helpful comments. Here's an excellent opportunity to ask questions and get group feedback on a concern or trouble area in your writing. You can then build on the valuable input from your group workshop by scheduling a one-on-one session with your host to further refine your piece. You can focus on your specific writing questions, your workshop comments, or your writing projects and goals. You will have the time and space to go deeper into your stories. Schedule this session during the retreat or afterward on Zoom. Afternoons are free for you to write, shop, and explore. The beach is only a block from the Inn, and quaint boutiques and restaurants in town are a short 5-minute walk. There are so many wonderful places within walking distance of the Inn to spend your afternoon writing. Grab a beach chair and write by the ocean, on a bench on the scenic Promenade, on a rocky chair on the lovely veranda at the Inn, or at a table nibbling a sweet pastry in the many cute coffee shops around town. Cape May is an exquisite gem located on the southernmost tip of the Jersey shore, offering natural beauty, pristine beaches, a scenic promenade, a rich history, and a picturesque lighthouse. In the evening readings, you can showcase to the group what you have been working on all day, or something you have completed in the past, or even published. Carve out some precious, dedicated time to write, network, make new friends, and share in the company of other kindred spirits over a creative weekend you won't forget. Picture yourself strolling along a scenic beach, people-watching from the Inn's large veranda, and writing stories that touch people's hearts and minds. Let your creativity flow in a serene, sacred spot surrounded by other artistic souls. Combine your love of writing and traveling! Spend your days writing, sightseeing, and suntanning in enchanting Cape May, the oldest seaside resort in the US and a popular summer getaway since the 1700s.

The Inn can accommodate any food restrictions and needs. Although lunch and dinner are not included in the retreat fee, the retreat leader organizes an optional group dinner on the first night of the retreat, after the initial session, to help the group continue getting to know one another. Another optional dinner on the third night will be takeout and delivered to the retreat, so the group can eat and enjoy the evening's author readings together. Lunches are on your own, but often the writers join the retreat leader after the morning session and walk together to eat at one of the nearby restaurants.

Testimonials

info

"Judy designs and leads the timing and calendar well. Her interest in the writers is genuine and evident. The retreat drew positive and interesting writers from varied places in the USA. It was a wonderful adventure for those who attended and a fine source for newer writers to hear about their work from more seasoned writers. ~Lynn D., Madison, NJ, Returned for 2nd Retreat

Lynn Doll, US

"This was my sixth retreat with Judy, so that pretty much says it all! Somehow, she makes it relaxing even if you're nervous about sharing your writing with others. Every time I leave, I feel more confident and inspired to reach my goal. By the time it's over, you've made new friends who just a few days earlier were strangers. If you're a writer or just want to give it a try, Judy's retreats show you the way, and you'll want to come back for more." ~Mary M., NYC, Returned for 6th Retreat

Mary Metzger, US

"I appreciated the opportunity for at least two daily writing exercises. It was so valuable to receive feedback from other encouraging writers. Judy is an excellent teacher. Retreat was well organized with ample time for shopping, walking, relaxing. This has changed and encouraged how I see myself as a writer!" ~Brennetta Simpson, Durham, NC
