Location
La Fortuna, Costa Rica
La Fortuna, tucked at the foot of Arenal’s near-perfect cone in northern Costa Rica, blends small-town warmth with outsized adventure amid emerald rainforest and old lava flows. Days can swing from hiking Arenal Volcano National Park and crossing Mistico’s hanging bridges above a toucan-stitched canopy to rappelling waterfalls in mossy canyons, whitewater rafting the Balsa, or kayaking on Lake Arenal with the volcano reflected in ripples. The thundering La Fortuna Waterfall plunges into a jade pool beneath bromeliad-clad cliffs, while night walks reveal red-eyed tree frogs, tarantulas, and the glow of fireflies. Geothermal rivers feed a constellation of hot springs—steaming cascades shaded by heliconias at Tabacón, quieter pools at EcoTermales—perfect after cloudbursts that turn to rainbows. Sloth tours and birding yield howler monkeys, oropendolas, and motmots; chocolate and coffee tastings trace bean to bar and cup; and local sodas dish up casados and fresh jugo de caña. Evenings settle under a cloud cap and the scent of wet earth, with the volcano’s silhouette keeping quiet watch over a town built for exploration and exhale.

Schedule
During the duration of the trip, there are various activities lined up for each spot. Please check the itinerary per day below.
You begin your journey with a warm group welcome and a delicious meal together. This is a chance to meet your fellow yogis, settle in, and prepare for the adventure ahead. An early night sets us up for our first full day.
Our first day of exploration begins at the vibrant Feria Verde local market, artisan handcraft, delicious local bites & fresh tropical juices. We then head high into the fertile farmland of Cartago to reach the summit of Volcán Irazú - at 3,432 metres, it offers views of both the Pacific & Caribbean on a clear day. Lunch is served on an organic family farm on the slopes of the volcano, in the rural part of the country to experience real Costa Rican life & see the way of life for many.
You travel to the lush Pacific side of Costa Rica, making a stop for some crocs and scenic points along the way. Arriving at the rainforest sanctuary near Quepos, you will immerse yourselves in nature with a river walk and a grounding, restful yoga practice to welcome in the jungle energy. Your first night here will be full of new and exciting sounds!
Today, you visit Manuel Antonio National Park, home to incredible biodiversity and stunning coastal views. You continue to the majestic Nauyaca Waterfalls for a swim, then head down to the laid-back hippy surf town of Dominical for free time, sunset, and a delicious dinner before returning to jungle retreat.
A full immersion in nature. You unplug from Wi-Fi and screens to reconnect with the present moment. Yogiwhale Travel fully encourages you to take full advantage of this experience, but of course, keep your devices for photos if you wish! Enjoy meditation, yoga, a refreshing waterfall dip, a heart-opening cacao ceremony,y and an evening fire circle under the stars - this is pura vida.
You rise early and journey inland toward Volcano Arenal, watching the landscape transform as you pass by cloud forests and lakes. Arriving at your glamping site, you unwind and stretch with yoga and soak in the natural thermal springs after your travel day, your body will be in bliss! Wood-fired pizza awaits you for dinner.
Today, you explore Mistico Park, walking through the infamous cloud forest trails and across the iconic hanging bridges; photo opportunities here are abundant. Afterward, you visit El Choyin hot springs and enjoy some free time in town. Evening yoga and a group dinner round off this wholesome day.
You begin with a gentle yoga class, then visit the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall, cascading 70 metres from a gap in the jungle. After lunch, you join a guide for a Twilight Safari walk - watching as the jungle shifts from day to night, some animals getting ready to sleep as others come alive! In the evening, enjoy some free time; choose to eat out or order in and relax by the fire pit for your last night at your cozy glamping site.
After our final yoga session in La Fortuna, we travel to the Caribbean coast to be welcomed into the vibrant Caribbean at our ocean retreat. After settling in & some orientation of the area & town just 5 minutes down the hill, we gather at Cocles Beach for a fire circle & sunset drinks, followed by dinner at a stylish beachside spot.
Morning yoga sets the tone before heading to Cahuita National Park for a peaceful beach meditation & time by the turquoise Caribbean sea. We’ll enjoy free time in Puerto Viejo downtown, choose to enjoy the beach some more, browse the markets or hire a bike to explore the beach road. After our time in Puerto Viejo town, we return to enjoy a Cacao ceremony & nourishing dinner.
You receive a rare invitation to visit the BriBri Indigenous community, which cultivates cacao. You’ll learn about their culture, tour the plantation, and share stories. On the return journey, you stop for a refreshing dip at Dos Rios Waterfall before an evening of Caribbean flavours—and perhaps a beachside dance!
We sleep in, enjoy a final breakfast & yoga session in with that Caribbean breeze, then journey back to San José. That evening, we gather for a farewell dinner to reflect on all we’ve shared & celebrate the deep connections made where it all started.
A final breakfast before the 10:00 checkout. You part ways carrying memories of a truly unforgettable experience—and some new lifelong friendships.

Nick’s presence alone would make any student feel safe & at ease. He cultivates a compassionate, non-judgemental space for his students regardless of level. His personality shines through his teaching practice, with sprinkles of humour which makes his classes feel light hearted. He is so much more than just a yoga teacher, offering knowledge, inspiration & words of wisdom which we can apply to life, both on & off the mat

Nick is a skilled & intuitive bodyworker & yoga guide, plus an all-around delightful person to spend time with! His sensitivity & patience created a feeling of safety & ease for me in both a bodywork session & dynamic yoga flow. It's a gift to be in the presence of a teacher who can both poetically & confidently speak, & also be completely comfortable in the necessary moments of silence. Nick can do both. His personal commitment to the yoga practice is evident in his capable teaching & healing work

Best vacation ever!!!!!! It was my first group trip of this kind and I was thrilled. The trip was perfectly organized and led by Nick, and we felt very comfortable. The entire trip was so wonderful that we're already thinking about booking another trip with Nick next year. Thank you Nick so much

A dream come true, yoga & adventure tour costa rica retreat with Yogi Whale / Nick This vacation was the most wonderful experience, beyond my wildest dreams. I arrived in Costa Rica excited and full of anticipation, as I had never been on a group trip or a yoga retreat before. From the very first moment, Nick/Yogi Whale made me feel at home and welcome, and so the group dynamic was perfect from the start. The vacation had the perfect mix of yoga, relaxation, and activities, allowing me to completely forget about time and everyday life back home. What more could you want on vacation! The yoga classes ranged from relaxing to challenging, and I definitely developed my practice further, for which I am especially grateful! Nick is a fantastic teacher; his voice and the way he speaks completely immerse you. As a guide, Nick was very attentive and well-organized. He communicated the day's plans well in advance, allowing us to simply enjoy the amazing excursions. Everything was perfectly prepared. Each accommodation was unique, inspiring dreams, leaving you breathless, or offering a glimpse into the lives of Costa Ricans. Whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner, every meal was perfect. The food was always high-quality and fresh, whether traditionally/locally prepared, in a restaurant, or a snack on the go. Everything was thoughtfully chosen. I've never returned from a vacation feeling so deeply relaxed, and for days afterward, I felt like I was on cloud nine. In short: This was the best vacation I've ever had. THANK YOU, Nick!!! I'm sure I'll travel with Yogi Whale again, and I miss him terribly, as well as the yoga classes and Costa Rica. Wolfgang / Germany

I recently returned from the Yogiwhale Travel Costa Rica yoga tour. I was introduced to Nick through his yoga YouTube channel. The trip was everything I expected and more. This was my third time to visit the beautiful country of Costa Rica, and I was always seeing new sights and having new experiences. I was cautious about participating in a yoga tour because my yoga skills are at a beginner level. Some of the trip members were yoga instructors and some were inexperienced like me. All of the yoga classes were inclusive regardless of where one starts. Nick's instruction was superb. The jungle settings for the classes added a new dimension to the yoga. The tour was well planned and included many sights in the 13 days, but it never felt rushed. Everything was well planned and carefully thought out. Even in the more crowded parks, we had reservations early in the day so we could have a better experience. We also had time to rest and explore the area at our own pace. Our tour leader Nick showed sensitivity to the environment and the local residents. Our small group lead my Nick and our driver Jonathan made the experiences feel like we were visiting friends in their environment and homes. We did not feel like the typical tourists going from one location to another. Our accommodations ranged from a large city hotel, jungle ecolodge, glamping, to a stay in a local home. All were comfortable and different from what most visitors to Costa Rica would experience. The food was local, fresh, and always delicious. We often had locals cook for us and restaurants were selected with care. Nick did a wonderful job guiding our group through Costa Rica. He exhibited strong leadership and organizational skills, and he is an effective yoga teacher. He always communicated that his priority is for our groups positive experience, comfort, and safety. I recommend Nick and Yogiwhale Travel without reservation.

BEAUTIFUL LIFE EXPERIENCE What an incredible journey with YOGIWHALE. It didn’t felt like a tour, it felt like friends visiting friends. Comfy acommodations, delicious local food, yoga classes and hikes with beautiful scenery and waterfalls. Nick had everything perfectly planned so you can connect with the nature and yourself, and don’t have to worry about anything, just to enjoy the trip. I will definitely travel with him again.

I stumbled across Yogiwhale while looking to visit Costa Rica for the first time, and although I was initially a little nervous (I haven’t done a fully guided tour since I was a kid) I’m so glad I took the chance and signed up. The first thing that hooked me was the varied mix of activities, yoga, excursions, and locations. However, it quickly became clear I had struck yogi traveler gold as our tour got underway; the attention to detail, the balance of activity and rest, the variety of local experts and guides, restaurants, accommodations, and all the gorgeous sites we visited. Everything felt well chosen and we were in good hands across the entire trip. There was respect for the environment, local economies and cultures. I never felt like a trampling tourist, And when we did find ourselves participating in the more popular attractions with other tourists, we seemed to move quickly through the lines, our passes already taken care of, or arriving at the perfect time to beat the crowds entirely. Everything was made easy for us, allowing me to really relax into the vacation & enjoy the breadth of experiences Costa Rica has to offer. Yogiwhale knows exactly what they’re doing and I’m so grateful I took that chance! 10 out of 5 stars!

Yoga tour of Costa Rica Our 13-day yoga-inspired journey with Nick from Yogiwhale through Costa Rica was nothing short of transformative—a really special mix of adventure, restoration, and connection. From the start, Nick's itinerary felt well balanced. We had plenty of time to explore, but also space to slow down and actually take it all in. The yoga practices were a huge part of that. Practicing in those natural settings—jungle, ocean, open air—just hits differently. Morning sessions felt energizing and clear, and the evening practices helped everything settle. The waterfalls were incredible. Each one had its own feel—some powerful and energizing, others more quiet and grounding. They gave us time to reset, cool off, do some cliff jumping or just be present. Glamping in La Fortuna was a highlight. Being that close to Arenal, falling asleep to the sounds of the rainforest—it felt immersive without giving up comfort. Just a really unique experience. Manuel Antonio brought a completely different energy. The beaches were beautiful, the ocean warm and gentle and wildlife was everywhere. Puerto Viejo was the perfect way to finish. Slower pace, great local culture, Caribbean vibe—it helped everything integrate instead of just rushing home after a packed trip. A big part of what made the experience so good was Nick Whaley, our guide and yoga teacher. He was amazing—steady, knowledgeable, and very real in how he led everything. Nothing felt forced or overly polished. He created space for people to have their own experience while still holding the group together, which isn’t easy to do. Overall, this trip never felt rushed, but we still experienced a lot. It felt intentional without being rigid. More than anything, it gave me a chance to step out of routine, reconnect, and come back feeling reset. I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a meaningful mix of travel, yoga, and time to actually slow down.

We'll organized and intentional. We'll organized, highly communicative. Kind leader who put a lot of thought and intention to making the experience great!

Pura Vida indeed! I first met Nick when he was leading tours for another tour travel company for 18 to 40 year olds and he set the bar so high so he has always been a stand out guide! Better than any other I've seen across multiple solo group style tour operators! From having such a great time with him before and trusting his judgement, and his relaxed but super organised style I was not suprised that this tour flowed very well! From well selected accommodation, bus driver, excursions with elements of yoga thrown in and taught by him it all came together well with a mixed pace. Some slow mornings and chill evenings and some jam packed days but we got to experience a true flavour of Costa Rica with the amazing jungle and volcano stays, reconnecting with all the beautiful nature and having a good laugh along the way! His booklet was a great touch to guide the journal thoughts for those who would be more unsure as well as with all the key trip information! Would highly recommend anything organised by him for anyone of any age, from any walk of life who wants a leader who cares about your experience, unlike others who care about their holiday more than yours! Pura Vida! Mucho gusto!

More Than a Trip — A Beautifully Curated and Meaningful Experience This was far more than a holiday — it was a beautifully curated, deeply meaningful experience from beginning to end. What I loved most was the incredible variety and depth of the yoga sessions. Every class was completely different, thoughtfully created, and offered something unique. It wasn’t just about yoga; it was also about breath, presence, self-reflection, and genuine inner work. The experience felt emotional, grounding, and deeply enriching. One of the most special touches was the beautifully prepared journal/workbook. It was so much more than an information guide — it was a thoughtful companion throughout the journey, filled with practical details as well as inspiring prompts and suggestions for personal reflection and inner work. That element added so much value and made the whole trip feel even more intentional. Everything was exceptionally well organised, always on time, and clearly planned with great care. The places selected were stunning, and I especially appreciated the connection with local businesses, which made the experience feel authentic, conscious, and even more memorable. You can truly feel the heart, thought, and dedication behind every detail. A genuinely special experience that I would highly recommend.

Yogiwhale tour of Costa Rica with optional yoga I have just completed the Costa Rica tour/yoga with Yogiwhale and can honestly say it has been brilliant. The three different styles of accommodation - jungle, glamping and homestay in three different areas really enhanced the experience. Costa Rica is naturally beautiful but Nick had selected the very best to show us. His local knowledge meant we didn't waste any time and managed to see and experience so much for which I am very grateful. Nick is a great leader, his organisational skills exceptional and paced the tour and optional yoga to suit all. A fabulous way to see the real Costa Rica with an easy going leader.

FAQs
Absolutely! This tour is a beautiful experience to share with a friend or partner. There are plenty of moments of free time to enjoy together, as well as locations to enjoy affection within the nature.
Room allocations will always prioritise a couple to share together, however in the Jungle Immersion part of the tour, there are only two tents available that can host 2 people, therefore depending on group dynamics, the tent may be shared with another person if there are more than 2 couples on the tour.
There is free time throughout the tour to enjoy the sun of course! But it is not a trip to spend lying down in the sun every day, there are activities and excursions planned in all the different parts of the country that we will visit. The sun here is also very very strong since we are close to the equator, therefore extra care must be given to protect yourself.
There are two main seasons, the dry season and the rainy season. This tour will operate in the dry season, however, this does not mean there is no rain. In fact, rain arrives all year round in Costa Rica, its’ rich biodiversity and lush green jungles are thanks to this. Therefore a light poncho and waterbag is essential in case of a downpour.
Costa Rica is wonderful, gorgeous & inspires slow living! You’ll experience so much richness in this tour that the memory of your visit & the people you meet will be imprinted in your heart forever!
But you have to be prepared that things here aren’t rushed, that could mean your meals in a restaurant take a little longer, or some home comforts aren’t available. Traffic can sometimes appear without warning which can delay journeys & disrupt the day - but that’s just how it is! The tour is always adaptable but punctuality for the activities & leaving times are really important - that’s all we ask, that if you take part in the tour you arrive on time to make the most of the experiences!
There will be lots of early starts to our days, around 6/7am. There are many reasons for this:
- The sun sets around 5:30pm, therefore days are short we will make the most of it by starting the day early and sleeping early.
- The National Parks close around 2/3pm, and they are VERY busy after 9am, therefore we will be going early to the national parks to avoid crowds and midday heat.
- Costa Ricans live close to the circadian rhythm for their own wellbeing. The normal Costa Rican day starts at 6am as they wake up with the sunrise (& roosters), so we will align our circadian rhythms as nature intended!
- As mentioned the heat/sun is very intense in Costa Rica, therefore we will try to complete some activities before the midday sun.
- You will also find that many of the towns have roosters, they are a pain, but part of life here. They often start clucking very early and can be hard to sleep through since it’s not a noise we are accustomed to! Therefore we will wake up with the roosters!
The accommodations we stay in during this tour are unique and carefully chosen to provide a memorable experience of Costa Rica. You probably won’t have stayed in places like this before, but you’ll remember them for the rest of your life! Limited WiFi, compost toilets, jungle sounds and fresh water showers are to be found in our Jungle Immersion part of the tour. Accommodation is shared between 2 in most accommodations or occasionally by 3 depending on group dynamics. A quick summary below will explain what to expect in each accommodation:
San Jose – a comfortable city hotel provides a base to start our trip, and also our last night to arrive close to the airport. It is clean and convenient with a beautiful garden, a gym and a pool. You can arrange to stay here and extra night before or after the trip if needed for your flight schedule.
Quepos – this is an off-grid accommodation, here we stay in safari style tents high up in the rainforest that sleep 2/3 people depending on package choice. There are outdoor showers and compost toilets with views of the canyon below (it will be your most memorable poop ever). There is a humble kitchen and a wonderful Tican lady who will cook us some local meals when we are there. There are no shops or utilities, it is a unique place to simply enjoy and connect with yourself and the nature.
La Fortuna – Here we stay in glamping tents in a beautiful resort outside of town immersed in nature. Glamping is posh camping, the tents sleep 2 people with an option of a double bed or a single mattress depending on your package choice.
Puerto Viejo – We will stay at a well established yoga campus just above the centre of town with a 6 minute walk to the beach! As we are a bit higher up, you get to soak up unforgettable views of the Caribbean sea while practising yoga or while you relax during in free time. Home to tropical gardens, comfortable hangout corners & a popular ayurvedic restaurant, it provides the perfect space to truly slow down & match the reggae vibes in this special part of Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is LOUD & ALIVE. The places we stay at will be quiet in the sense that they are immersed with nature (bar the city hotel). Nature can be noisy. At night, crickets, circadas, geckos and frogs will be the sounds lulling you to sleep. However in the morning, the jungle can be quite loud, howlers monkeys and birds announce the arrival of the sun, which helps to wake up naturally. It is recommend to bring earplugs if you’re worried these different sounds might keep you awake.
The terrain of Costa Rica is very mountainous and can be challenging. The walks and hikes in this tour to waterfalls and national parks are moderate. Good comfortable shoes will make easy work of it but equally could be done in sandals! It is recommended to have a moderate level of fitness/health to be able to comfortable enjoy the walks in our excursions.
You may have been on some retreats where it is strictly vegan/vegetarian food. However due to the nature of this tour/retreat that moves around, the catering can vary from place to place. Vegetarian/vegan options and other dietary requirements will always be available but we do not visit strictly veg only places.
The catering and restaurants are consciously chosen to provide food close to the land and culture of Costa Rica, the tastes are too good to miss!
Oh and there’s Pizza.
Costa Rica is regarded as one of the most safest counties in Latin America! But like anywhere, it is advised to exercise caution. We will not be visiting any parts of the country that are known to be dangerous, this is mainly contained to the capital city which has some challenging neighbourhoods.
There are a lot of bugs and insects that you will encounter in Costa Rica, this is just the way of life here in the warm tropics, and not a reflection of uncleanliness. Mosquitos and sand gnats can be uncomfortable so ensure to bring repellent or light trousers for the evening. Venomous snakes, spiders and frogs are nocturnal and therefore are only present at night, but still very rare – we recommend not to leave any guided paths to explore the jungle at night without a guide.
Yes there is a lot of travelling. Costa Rica is only twice the size of Wales but the infrastructure and highways are challenging. This is what contains the beauty of the country!
Between each destination on the tour is around 3-5 hours driving, however we use a comfortable van with AC, refreshments and breaks along the way. Once at our destinations, we explore the local area with some excursions but try to avoid long journeys from our accommodation.
There are a lot of winding roads around the mountainous landscape of Costa Rica, therefore if you are prone to travel sickness, you may want to bring medicines to help.
Whichever company you choose a tour with, long journeys can not be avoided, therefore please prepare for this.
Cancellation policy
The remaining balance for the retreat is due 60 days prior to the start date. If this balance is paid earlier than these 60 days, you are eligible to cancel and receive a full refund of this remaining balance, provided you do so at least 60 days before the retreat begins.
