Find a comfortable position with your eyes open or closed.
If your mind is busy,
Let it be busy.
You do not need to clear your thoughts right now.
For the next few minutes,
We are simply going to practice giving your attention somewhere to rest.
You can begin by noticing your breath.
Nothing to shift,
Nothing to change.
Simply notice one inhale and one exhale.
And then choose one place in your body where the breath is easiest to feel.
Maybe it's the sensation of the nostrils,
The rise and fall of the chest,
Or the expansion of the belly.
Pick one place.
And let that be your anchor for this practice.
For the next few moments,
Simply stay right here.
Feeling the inhale,
Feeling the exhale.
At some point your mind will probably wander off.
Whenever you notice that moment.
Know that nothing has gone wrong.
Your mind is working exactly as it was designed to work.
Just notice,
Ah,
My attention went somewhere else.
And then gently bring it back to this one singular sensation.
Notice what tells you that the inhale is happening and the exhale is happening.
You might notice movement,
Temperature,
Or simply the sensation of the breath brushing by.
You do not need to hold your attention perfectly.
What you are practicing is the act of returning it.
Shoulders relax.
Muscles around your forehead and eyes at ease.
Body fully supported.
And attention right here.
Noticing.
Returning.
This is the practice.
This right here is a microcosm of your life outside of this seat.
Because your attention will wander off today,
It will drift into a thought,
Into your phone,
Into yesterday,
Into something that hasn't even happened yet.
And when it does.
You will remember that the practice isn't about keeping your attention perfectly still.
The practice is noticing when your attention has gone somewhere you didn't choose and knowing that you can always come back.
Take one full breath in.
And a slow,
Complete breath out.
Notice,
Return,
Begin again.
