I'd like to invite you into a small experiment this morning.
You may have already noticed that mornings have a way of beginning quickly.
Before our feet have fully landed,
The mind is often already moving.
Thinking,
Remembering,
Planning.
Reaching in some way toward the day ahead.
And none of this is wrong.
It's simply what minds do.
But for the next few minutes.
What if we began somewhere different?
If it feels comfortable,
Allow your eyes to close or simply soften your gaze.
Take a slow breath in.
And an easy breath out.
Nothing to solve right now,
Nothing to figure out,
No version of yourself you need to become in this moment.
Just notice.
You're here.
Breathing.
At the beginning of a new day.
And before your attention inevitably moves outwards.
Always the plans,
The people.
The responsibilities and the possibilities.
See if just for a moment.
You can notice what is already here.
The breath moving in and out.
The quiet work of your body.
Simple fact that this day has begun.
Notice what happens when you allow yourself to arrive before you evaluate.
Perhaps the breath softens.
Perhaps there is a little more space.
Or perhaps nothing changes at all,
You are simply noticing.
Most of us think gratitude comes after.
After something meaningful happens,
After life goes our way,
After things feel easier.
But what if gratitude is not a reaction at all?
What if gratitude is a foundation?
A way of meeting the day.
Before we decide what to think about the day.
There is a simple teaching from Rabbi Jonathan Sachs that I return to often.
He said,
Simply,
We think before we think.
Such a small sentence and yet perhaps a different way to begin.
Because what we practice noticing,
We begin to recognize more easily.
And many mornings before we fully arrived,
Our attention is already reaching towards something.
What if gratitude came first?
Not because life is perfect,
Not because everything feels easy.
But because before anything else,
Something has already been given.
This breath.
This moment.
Another beginning.
Before you begin carrying the day notice something gentle.
Something is already carrying you.
The chair.
The bed.
The ground beneath you.
The steady rhythm of breath.
Life quietly holding you here.
Take a slow breath in.
Into long breath out.
And simply notice.
What feels available to appreciate this morning.
No need to search,
No need to force.
Allow it to arrive effortlessly.
Perhaps it's something meaningful,
Someone you love,
A possibility ahead.
Or perhaps it is something beautifully ordinary.
Warm sheets.
Morning Light.
Coffee waiting.
The simple gift of waking up.
And if gratitude feels far away today,
Let it be small,
Honest,
Simple.
Notice what shifts.
When gratitude has the first word.
When it is not a reaction but a foundation.
The day itself may not change.
But perhaps the place from which you meet the day-changers.
Before we finish,
I want to offer you a small morning ritual.
Tomorrow.
Before you reach for your phone,
Before the thinking rushes in.
Before your feet even touch the ground.
Pools.
Take one conscious breath.
And say two simple words.
Thank you.
Thank you before you decide what to think about the day,
Before you decide what to think about yourself.
Thank you before you decide what to think about your life.
Let gratitude have the first word.
Take one final deep breath in.
And just slow the breath out.
And when you're ready.
Open your eyes.
Carry this into the day ahead.
A different beginning.
Think before you think.
