We live with a constant stream of notifications,
Messages,
And interruptions,
Which can make it harder than ever to stay focused.
In this video,
I'm going to be sharing three ways to help improve your focus.
The first is to reduce the noise.
When you need to concentrate,
Try creating a little more space for quiet.
Even receiving a phone notification can disrupt attention,
Even if you don't actually check your phone.
We're so conditioned to hearing that little ping on our phone,
And then our mind starts wondering,
Calling,
Maybe it's the person I was trying to reach earlier,
And perhaps we're already playing through conversations.
So whenever possible,
Turn off notifications,
Put your phone away,
And close anything that you don't need.
Give your mind less things to respond to.
The second is to let yourself be bored.
We're so used to filling every gap with stimulation,
And we're standing in line,
We're checking our phone,
We're going for a walk,
We have to be listening to something,
Or if we have five minutes,
We're scrolling on our phone.
Try leaving some of those moments empty.
It's okay to let your mind wander a little.
And when you think about it,
Why is it that we have the best ideas when we're in the shower?
It actually creates the conditions for insight.
And finally,
Try reading 10 pages of a book every day.
10 pages isn't a huge commitment,
But over time,
It can add up.
Reading requires sustained attention,
So it's a simple way to practice focusing on one thing at a time.
It also gives your brain a different type of stimulation rather than scrolling through small bits of information.
So in closing,
Less noise,
More space to be bored,
And 10 pages a day.
