Hello and welcome to this short lecture on the art of mindful cleaning from a Buddhist and a Zin perspective.

I wanted to start this quick lecture with a quote from Thich Nhat Hanh,

Or Thich Nhat Hanh,

Take care of the moment and you take care of all time.

Mindful cleaning is an ancient practice deeply rooted in Buddhism.

It teaches us to bring our full attention to seemingly mundane tasks such as cleaning,

Transforming it into a form of meditation and an opportunity for spiritual growth.

Here I will explore the importance of mindful cleaning and how it can lead to inner peace,

Self-awareness,

And help us in our journey towards awakening.

The essence of mindful cleaning is this,

Cleanliness and orderliness are not matters of instinct,

They are matters of education and like most great things,

You must cultivate a taste for them.

In the context of Buddhism,

Mindful cleaning is not merely about keeping our surroundings clean and orderly,

But also about nurturing a clean and orderly mind.

By being fully present in the act of cleaning,

We can develop a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all things and cultivate mindfulness in every aspect of our lives.

The next is the practice of mindful cleaning,

Where we'll start with a quote from the great Zen master,

Shunryu Suzuki.

The true purpose of Zen is to see things as they are,

To observe things as they are,

And to let everything go as it is.

To practice mindful cleaning,

Begin by setting an intention to be fully present in the task.

Pay attention to the physical sensations,

The sounds,

And the scents involved in cleaning.

Observe the movement of your body and the thoughts and emotions that arise.

By doing so,

You allow your mind to rest and become one with the activity.

Next we have the benefits of mindful cleaning.

Mindful cleaning has numerous benefits of course,

Both practical and spiritual.

It helps us develop patience,

Focus,

And appreciation for this present moment.

It allows us to practice non-attachment,

Letting go of the ego,

And understanding the impermanence of all things.

In this way,

Mindful cleaning can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and spiritual growth.

The true miracle is not walking on water or walking in thin air,

But simply walking presently on this earth in everything that we do.

Before enlightenment,

Chop wood carry water.

After enlightenment,

Chop wood carry water.

Incorporating mindful cleaning into your daily routine can be simple.

You might choose a specific time or activity to practice mindfulness,

Such as sweeping the floor,

Washing the dishes,

Or just tidying up your living space.

But remember,

The key is to be fully present and engaged in the task,

No matter how mundane it may seem.

Each day is a journey,

And the journey itself is home.

Through the practice of mindful cleaning,

We can embrace the beauty and simplicity of everyday life.

Finding peace and tranquility in the present moment.

By engaging wholeheartedly in our daily tasks,

We can cultivate a deep sense of interconnectedness and unity with the world around us.

In doing so,

We learn to appreciate the ordinary transforming aspects of our life into something extraordinary.

Sometimes I feel really discouraged about my meditation practice because I am in a stage of life where it is difficult to find a quiet moment and place. This has given me a way to continue my mindfulness practice in a super simple and every day occurrence. I feel so much lighter after this shift in perspective. Thank you for this small but powerful way to connect with my space.
