Transcript

Have you ever tried to think your way out of anxiety and it just didn't work?

You told yourself,

Calm down.

You're fine.

Stop overthinking.

But your body didn't get the memo.

That's because anxiety does not start in your thoughts.

It starts in your nervous system.

When your body perceives stress or threat,

Your brain shifts into survival mode.

Your heart rate increases,

Your breathing changes,

Your muscles tense.

And in that state,

Your thinking brain actually goes offline.

So no matter how logical or insightful you are,

You can't mindset your way out of a dysregulated body.

That's why somatic practices are so important.

Somatic simply means body-based.

These are tools that help your body feel safe again.

So your mind can follow.

And the best part is that they're simple.

And they're accessible and they work in real time.

Here are a few examples.

You can try bilateral movement,

Like slowly tapping left and right.

Which helps your brain process and settle.

You can do paced breathing,

Like inhaling for four.

Exhaling for six.

Which signals safety to your nervous system.

You can orient your body by gently looking around your space and noticing what feels neutral or calm.

This helps bring you out of survival mode.

Or even something as small as pressing your feet into the ground to remind your body,

I'm here.

I'm safe.

These aren't just coping skills.

They're ways to regulate your physiology.

Because when your body feels safe,

Your thoughts become clearer.

Your emotions feel more manageable.

And your responses become more intentional.

So the next time anxiety shows up,

Instead of asking,

What's wrong with me?

Try asking.

What does my body need right now?

That's where real change begins.
