Hello everyone and welcome to my introduction on the yoga sutras of Pantanjali.
Today I am going to discuss the second sutra out of the first book Samadhi Pada.
So this sutra reads as this,
Yogas Chitta Friti Naroda,
Which means yoga is the restraint of the thoughts that can make one suffer.
So in all its essence,
This sutra sums up what yoga is and why yoga should be practiced.
So the practice of yoga is to quiet the mind and to practice inner awareness.
And by doing this as such,
We quiet the mind of negative thinking or thoughts that make us suffer.
Because most of our suffering is created by the mind.
Not so much what is happening in the outside world,
It's our perception of the outside world that creates suffering.
So for most of us our suffering comes from the mind or the chitta.
And once we have secured food and shelter,
Wants and desires start to cloud the mind.
So when the mind creates a desire,
It can occupy our thoughts until either the desire is fulfilled.
And if this desire is never fulfilled,
It leaves us feeling with emotions of defeat,
Jealousy,
Maybe lack.
And when desires get fulfilled,
It leaves us wanting more,
Because the joy we find from the fulfillment is only temporary.
So we can choose to live and suffer with each desire as they arise.
Or we can become one with the universe,
Allowing things to come and go as the universe intended it to.
And we can't keep the mind set on any outcomes,
Because outcomes can change.
And we never know what's going to happen in the future.
So relying on our awareness in the present moment is where we find that bliss,
That path towards samadhi.
So this is what the practice of yoga focuses on.
This phrase alone describes what yoga does.
We can choose to be bound by our thoughts.
Or we can be liberated by the idea that the thoughts do not define the essence of who we truly are.
And we truly are a soul having a human experience,
Where we think we're a human having a human experience.
So tapping into that higher power and that strength of will,
Strong mind,
Strong body,
And looking into this path of yoga to create inner peace.
For when we fulfill our lives from what we feel on the inside,
The outside world tends to change around our thoughts.
Our thoughts do not change if the outside world changes to what we expect.
So when we flip,
Finding happiness within,
We start to see the beauty of the reality outside of us.
So never looking on the outside for anything to fulfill desire,
To fulfill joy.
It's bringing joy from within in all things.
So until next time,
I'll talk to you guys soon.
Take care.
Namaste.
