Into The Temple - Fall Equinox Nidra
by Melanie Dawn
On the fall equinox, we experience equal parts light and dark, day and night. It is the doorway into the underworld, the darkness of winter, where we seek refuge within. Rest, reflect and renew are the qualities as we leave the masculine energy of the sun behind us. What is left within you that is wanting to be released, to transition from life into death, only to be reborn in the Spring.

In this fall,
Equinox yoga nidra will take time and refuge to the center of the soul,
The awakening of the heart,
Inward towards the inner temple of your own innate wisdom.
Finding a safe place to rest,
Lying your body flat on your back,
Allow your arms and legs to fall out from midline at equal distance,
Allowing the brain to settle into the balance of right and left,
The synchronicity of spacing between right and left.
And take a deep breath in,
Fill the whole body with breath,
And then hold it once it's full,
Honoring and acknowledging this need or will to live,
To breathe,
And then an open mouth release.
Take another long slow breath inward,
Feel that breath reach all the way down to your toes,
Hold,
And let it go.
Breath in through the nose,
Noticing the temperature,
The cool caress as it touches the inner nasal,
And the breath warms in the belly and holding,
Continue to hold.
And this time as you release,
Feel your body drop its weight into the earth,
Utilizing the power of the exhale,
The sigh of relief the physical bodies want to let go,
Moving into the land of yogic sleep,
Sleeping body,
Awakened mind,
And the eyes softly close if they haven't already,
The breath starts to slow and steady,
In communication with the nervous system that this is a safe place to rest,
A safe place to be,
And the action of non-doing is the only action being completed.
As we transfer awareness to the seed of witness,
Releasing ourselves of being in the middle of every thought,
And taking consciousness upward like the eagle soaring high above the sky,
In this world but not of it,
Continuing to witness each breath,
Using the breath as a tether for the mind to stay here,
To stay present,
As your whole body continues to drop weight down into Mother Earth,
Breath released upward into Father Sky,
And you recognize this duality that exists between earth and sky,
Grounded,
Heavy,
Airy and light,
Coexisting,
An experience for your body,
Your energetic body,
And the spirit that is within you,
Honoring the time of outward connection,
And transitioning into inner reflection,
As the length of the days becomes shorter and shorter,
You are at the door of darkness on this day.
We'll move the mind through rotation of consciousness,
Mapping the physical body and opening the subconscious mind into deeper exploration,
Into deeper exploration,
And deeper knowing,
Spontaneous insights from the Mystery School which exists within you,
Within me,
And within all of us.
Bring your awareness to your right side,
And land it so gently into the right hand palm.
Imagine as though there is a finger caressing your skin,
As you move from point to point,
Guiding the fingertip over your skin,
Feel it move upward into the right hand thumb,
Over into your index finger,
Middle finger,
Ring finger,
Baby finger.
Bring the sensation of touch and awareness upward through the right arm,
Over the right shoulder,
Down the front of your chest,
Over the clavicle bone,
Across your beautiful belly,
Trace it over to the right hip,
Down your right leg,
And land this touch into your right toe,
The big toe,
Your second toe,
Third toe,
Fourth toe,
Fifth toe,
And draw the sensation of touch across the sole of your foot,
And upward through the whole of the right side body.
Feel the whole right side body vibrating with energy,
Awakened from its slumber.
Breathe into the right side body.
Channel awareness into the left side body.
Let it sink into the left palm,
And draw skin to skin contact as awareness moves through left thumb,
Index finger,
Middle finger,
Ring finger,
Baby finger.
Draw awareness up the left arm,
Across and over the left shoulder,
Down the center of the chest touching the clavicle,
Over your belly,
Soft,
Supple,
To the left hip,
Down the left leg,
And into each toe,
Big toe,
Second toe,
Third toe,
Fourth toe,
Fourth toe,
Fifth toe.
The awareness of energy and touch as you move down the sole of the foot,
And upward through the whole left side body,
Whole left side body awakened with energy,
Awakened with breath and the awareness of touch.
Moving up the back body,
Starting at the points of the heels,
Feel touch move from the heels through the back of the legs,
Crossing over the buttocks,
Low back,
Mid back,
Upper back,
And down both arms.
Feel the sensation of touch move through the back of your neck,
Where it meets your skull,
And massaging your head with awareness of touch,
Crossing fingertips over the forehead,
Each eyelid soft,
Closed,
Down the tip of your nose,
Across your cheeks,
Both lips,
Your jaw,
Your chin,
Over your throat,
Down the clavicle,
Right side,
Left side,
Down each arm,
Both arms together,
Over your breast,
Right and left,
Touching your rib cage,
Your soft belly,
Your hip points,
And both legs,
And both legs,
Landing down into the toes.
Feel your whole body awaken with being seen,
Being touched,
Being felt,
Whole body awareness,
Whole body awareness,
Whole body awareness.
On this day,
The day of the fall of equinox,
Light equals darkness.
We are at the precipice of moving into the dark,
Of opening the temple of the door of darkness,
Walking towards a golden staircase.
See yourself move upward through 15 different steps,
Feeling the ascension of self as you rise,
An energy moving from the root to the crown,
An awakening of the Kundalini energy in your spine.
Each step takes you higher and higher upward through the spine,
Connecting outward through the crown chakra,
As you take the last step to arrive at a golden landing,
A doorknob coated in rubies.
It is here where light turns to dark,
Where we stand at the doorway,
The equinox of equal light and day,
Night and dark.
It is here where we put to rest the play,
The activity,
The outward connection that we have been living in,
The light of the sun,
The masculine energy,
And we cross the threshold into the moon,
Into the cool light of the moon,
And turn inward towards ourselves.
And as this door opens,
The Mystery School arrives,
The ancient teachings,
The sacred knowings that exist within you,
The innate wisdom that you hold when you go in.
As you turn the door,
The handle coated in rubies,
And step forward into the dark,
It is here that has the gifts for you,
What is meant to be seen,
Felt,
Validated within you.
Come to rest there.
Find a seat on this beautiful purple velvet couch.
Lay down if it feels right.
Close your eyes and turn inward.
Asking yourself,
What is it that I must leave behind in order to move forward?
What is it that is calling me inward towards my heart?
The higher calling that exists within me?
What do I need to let go of in order to arrive at the light of the sun?
What do I need to let go of in order to arrive to this space,
This becoming of who I was always meant to be?
My destiny.
What do I need to know?
And it's safe to let go of the need to do,
To be anything more than this moment in time,
This breath,
This body,
This experience,
This humanness.
What is it that is dying to be released?
The leaves that need to fall from the tree in order for new life to be birthed.
How am I to turn inward?
Where's my gaze being shown to?
What do I need to learn at this time?
As you come into the space of darkness,
The vast landscape of dark,
Welcome yourself here.
This is your refuge.
This is where you go to rest.
And acknowledging that the cycle of nature exists within each day,
Each month,
Each year,
And the seasons play out in all of those times.
There's a duality of light and dark within you,
No matter what time or phase you are in.
As you start to awaken from your slumber,
You're welcome to stay in the refuge of the dark,
The safety of the dark,
And awaken the physical body slowly starting to lift heavy eyelids without opening,
Sensing the heaviness of your eyelids as they struggle to open.
And with the next breath,
Allowing them to open,
Your body to be felt,
Your body to be felt,
A deep breath to be held,
And gently released.
The practice of yoga nidra is now complete.
Hariyom Tat Sat,
Hariyom Tat Sat,
