Hello and welcome to Make It Conscious and to this guided active imagination exercise.
So in this exercise we're going to be investigating the symbol of the forest.
So forests have played a vital role,
Continue to play a vital role in our lives.
Much of Europe was once dominated by forest.
Even today the Amazon rainforest for example is believed to contain around 10% of all the world's species.
Forests are often associated with the unconscious itself.
Reasons for that are fairly simple.
They contain a number of unknown elements.
You never quite know what you're going to discover in a forest.
There are places of loneliness,
Healing and continuous growth and decay.
Jung himself once wrote,
The forest has a mysterious impenetrability.
Things suddenly appear and disappear and there are no paths.
Anything is possible.
With that said though,
I always think the best way to understand any symbol is really to engage with it directly.
So just beginning the exercise by making sure you're comfortable.
You can do this seated or lying down.
And just closing your eyes.
And now just bringing your attention to the breath.
Starting the exercise in this way just helps to clear out the mind a bit.
So whether you notice it as the rise and fall of the chest or abdomen.
Or the sensation of the air moving through the nostrils.
Just rest your attention there for now.
Just relaxing into the exercise.
And if at any point the mind wanders,
Simply bring your attention back to whatever it is you're doing as part of the exercise.
Just imagine yourself on the edge of a vast forest.
This can be any kind of forest.
Whether deciduous,
Pine,
Or rainforest.
Just allow it to form naturally.
Allow it to present itself to you in whatever form it needs to take.
Just take a moment to look at it from where you stand.
Notice any characteristics or features.
And notice how you feel standing next to it.
And so when you're ready,
Journey into the forest and notice how things change.
Take a look around you.
As you journey into the forest,
Notice if the forest is dense or sparse.
Does it make your journey straightforward or difficult?
Take note of the sights,
Sounds,
Smells,
And how the ground feels beneath your feet.
Eventually in this forest,
You arrive at a clearing.
And this is the space where you're going to engage in interaction with the forest itself.
Open yourself up to its deeper meaning and understand what it holds for you specifically.
So just settle in this clearing now.
Take a look around and notice the various features of the plants and trees around you.
Notice the size and thickness of the trees and foliage.
What is it you hear?
Is there wind blowing through the trees?
Wind rustling?
Animal calls?
Or something else?
Perhaps if there's any salient features or markings or any other symbols appearing,
Take note of those as well.
And so next,
You're going to enter into an interaction with the forest.
Now you can choose a particular aspect to engage with,
Whether it's a single tree or plant or some other symbol or creature perhaps.
That appears.
Or you can just address the forest generally from this space.
As always,
Just allowing it to come to you.
Not trying to force it one way or the other.
And as this interaction unfolds here,
That may well change.
Aspects may come forward.
Perhaps start by just observing it and watching how it presents itself to you.
How is it changing?
Start by asking,
What do you represent?
And next,
What do you represent for me?
What is it I need to understand about you?
What part of you wants to be explored?
And what can I do to better honor the things you represent?
So having asked these questions and received the forest's answers,
You're next going to enter into a two-way interaction with this forest.
This is where you can ask any additional questions you feel the need to ask or to build on what it's already said to you.
Perhaps take this time to do as it suggested,
Honor the forest in some way.
What's important here is that you enter into this two-way interaction where you get to act and speak back to the forest.
Continue to honor its autonomy and see how it responds to you.
So take the next minute or so now to have this two-way interaction.
This interaction with the forest.
And so as this interaction comes to an end,
Do whatever you need to do to bring it to a close.
Perhaps thank the forest.
Let it know that it's time for you to leave.
Remember,
You can always come back to this place if you feel there was something unfinished.
But for now,
Just allowing the scene to fade and bringing your attention back into the space around you.
Noticing any sounds or sensations.
It can be a good idea to journal this experience after the exercise.
And so in your own time,
Opening your eyes again.
