The Devil in tarot, not to be confused with the devil of religion, represents a complex array of meanings tied to the material world and our experiences within it. It symbolises the notions of seniority, expertise, manifestation, and the challenges of material and societal constraints. Associated with Capricorn and ruled by Saturn, this card delves into the themes of discipline, determination, and the trials we face in the pursuit of competence and success. It also reflects on the limitations, both self-imposed and external, that can lead to feelings of stagnation or oppression. In this active imagination exercise, we will confront the symbolic 'Devil' within us, examining our attachments to materialism, traditional structures, and the rigidity that may hinder our growth.

The Devil card,

In tarot,

Not to be confused with the devil from religion,

Represents a complex array of meanings,

Tied to the material world and our experiences within it.

It symbolises the notions of seniority,

Expertise,

Manifestation,

And the challenges of material and societal constraints.

Associated with the Capricorn and ruled by Saturn,

This card delves into the themes of discipline,

Determination,

And the trials we face in the pursuits of success and competence.

It also reflects on the limitations,

Both self-imposed and external,

That can lead to feelings of stagnation or oppression.

In this active imagination exercise,

We will confront the symbolic devil within us,

Examining our attachments to materialism,

Traditional structures,

And the rigidity that may hinder our growth.

So first,

Just making sure you are grounded,

Whether seated or lying comfortably.

Close your eyes.

Just take a couple of deep breaths.

Just allowing the mind and the body to relax naturally.

And as the breath returns to normal,

Just keeping your attention on the sensation of the breath.

Whether it's the air moving through the nostrils,

Or the rise and fall of the chest or abdomen.

Just going to clear out the mind a little as we get ready to enter the imagination.

If at any point you do get distracted,

Just bring the attention back to the exercise.

And now,

Imagine yourself entering a space that represents the material and structural aspects of your life.

This could be some kind of workplace,

A symbolic structure,

Or any kind of environment that feels heavily governed by rules and authority.

In this space,

You encounter a figure that represents the devil card for you.

It could embody the forces of restriction,

Material obsession,

Or the coldness of rigid discipline.

It could appear as a figure that represents these,

Or indeed as a devil or demon.

Take a moment to examine it more closely.

Noticing its attire,

Its behavior,

And its expression.

You're now going to engage in a conversation with this figure and ask it a series of questions.

Just state the question to the figure and observe how it responds.

What do you symbolize in my life?

How do you influence my decisions and actions?

In what ways do I find myself bound by material desires or societal expectations?

How have any structures and rules that I follow limited my personal growth or freedom?

Having asked these questions and listened out for any responses,

Now enter a free-form conversation with this figure.

This is your chance to say whatever you'd like to say.

Ask any more questions and see how the figure responds.

And now imagine yourself taking some kind of symbolic action to assert your independence,

Breaking free from unnecessary constraints,

Or finding a healthier balance between discipline and flexibility.

Witness how your action leads to a transformation in the environment or the figure itself.

Observe any changes in your feelings or perspective.

As you prepare to leave this space,

Take with you any insights or lessons learned.

It's just allowing the scene to fade now.

And remember it can be useful to journal this experience after the exercise and continue to reflect on it in the coming days and weeks.

So just bringing your attention back to the space around you now,

Noticing any sounds and sensations,

Taking a deep breath and in your own time opening your eyes again.
