When Liz’s friend recalls the time after a serious car accident, he describes feeling completely present within himself — aware and alive — even as he faced a life changing brain injury. In today’s 5 Minutes In Nature, Liz reflects on the wisdom in his words and finds deep hope in this powerful story of resilience and the human spirit.

Hello and welcome to five minutes in nature with me Liz Scott right on the top of Dartmoor just above my home on Ugbera Beacon and I've taken the short walk up in other words I've taken the steepest route and I set myself a little goal which was just to keep on walking and it's very very steep didn't matter how slow I went one step in front of the other until I got to the top and here I am now sitting down on a rock sheltering from the wind looking eastwards I'm looking at the moment towards the Avon Valley the the valley of the Avon River that comes down from Dartmoor itself and I can imagine that particular valley because I've been there I've walked there and below it is a place called Shipley Bridge which is somewhere I've walked to and it's just very peaceful looking out across the moor in this north easterly direction because it's unchanged there's no houses there's no people there's no farmland this is the same landscape probably would have been seen 10 20 100 200 500 maybe even a thousand years ago and here I am reflecting on a conversation I was listening into this morning and it's a conversation that points to us all being okay like absolutely totally okay at the level of soul and I tell you a story of my friend and I've only ever known him since he had a brain injury so I didn't know him before this but probably about 30 40 years ago he was in a really bad car accident he was in a car waiting in a queue of cars and pretty much out of nowhere another car came around the corner skidded flipped over and landed on top of him on top of his head pretty much I mean he was rushed into hospital and it was touch-and-go as to whether he would survive as it was he was in a coma for six weeks and then a vegetative state when he came out of the coma for months afterwards he had to be taught everything he had to be taught how to eat how to talk how to be with people he couldn't remember people that he was with he couldn't remember his daughter his young daughter at the time he didn't remember who she was he was in a really bad place and for his wife it was a very terrifying experience as well but we were in a group and the group that I was in and he was in and his wife was in we were talking about something called the three principles or the inside-out understanding and one of the key aspects of this understanding and there's a course called an introduction to the three principles if you'd like to learn more about it on insight timer but one of the key aspects of this understanding is a deep recognition and an experience that we are at our core deeply okay we're connected to the energy of life we are at a place that cannot be broken and my friend as he was talking in this group it's several years now since he went through this experience so he's he's a bit slow cognitively in the way that he communicates but he's still very able to communicate and likes to talk he was explaining that when he came out of the coma and when he was in this state physical state of a very very broken body he knew absolutely that he was unchanged and his wife chipped in as he was explaining the story because she said he was completely changed you know I lost the person I lost the character the personality of my old husband and even though he is so much better than he was this is not the same man and yet he was explaining and she was listening and had obviously heard this before that he was no different he was absolutely no different this was the same spirit that he experienced just after his coma was the same spirit spirit he experienced of himself when he set out to drive home that day and I take great hope in that for me it deeply deeply illustrates that we are unbreakable at our core that doesn't mean we don't physically get hurt of course we do that doesn't mean that we don't eventually die what it means is that we are the energy of life universal energy God energy taking form as human beings and when our human form falls away that energy remains and that energy is ever-present even in our human form regardless of what we've been through in our life

Thank you for sharing your friend's healing journey. So amazing that he felt exactly the same before and after his struggle for physical survival We are all unbroken, connected and Life Energy.

Thanks Liz 🙏🏼 At his very basic core level, his spirit he wasn’t unchanged. What a horrible experience for the family and his daughter. It is the ripple effect of such a freak accident. And the other driver how they cope with it, if they survived. Wow. Life is so precious and so easily changed and your friend must have gone to places in his soul we cannot relate to. His Spirit must be strong. 🌿🦋🌿

I am reassured by this too! And I wonder-is one small part of this “knowing” revealed when we have moments of feeling like we are still young inside despite the contrary evidence of our aging bodies? 🤔Thanks Liz!
