Take a moment to get comfortable.
You can close your eyes and just begin by arriving here.
Not needing to get anywhere.
Not needing to feel grateful yet.
Not needing to make anything happen,
Just arriving.
I invite you to feel the support underneath your body,
That could be the chair,
The bed,
The floor.
Notice that you're being held here and take a slow easy breath in and and let it out.
Again,
Breathing in and breathing out.
Just noticing what it feels like to be here.
You can let your body be exactly as it is.
For the next few minutes,
We're going to practice gratitude.
But not the kind where we force ourselves to come up with a list of things we should be grateful for.
Because sometimes gratitude can feel very far away.
Sometimes life is difficult.
Sometimes we're tired.
Sometimes we're hurting.
And sometimes the most honest thing we can say is.
.
.
I don't feel very grateful right now and that's okay too.
We're not here to make any sort of feeling that isn't here.
Instead,
An invitation is just to notice.
Notice what is already here.
You can bring your awareness back to your breath.
Not changing it.
Just noticing.
The breath coming in.
And the breath going out.
And notice something very simple.
All you need is the breath.
You don't have to make the next birth happen.
You don't even need to figure it out.
The body knows what to do by breathing in and breathing out.
Maybe if it feels right for you.
Just for this moment.
Maybe there's an appreciation for that.
Sometimes we forget our breath because it's so ordinary.
It's so here.
And the breath is always here.
Supporting you.
Even when you don't notice it.
Maybe especially if you don't notice it.
And now if you feel comfortable too and you're ready,
You can let your awareness move through your body.
You may start by noticing your hands.
Maybe feel whatever is there.
Could be warmth,
It could be a tingling sensation.
And consider,
If you're open to it,
That just for this moment,
How much these hands have done for you,
Have taken care of you.
How many things they have held.
How many things they have made.
How many people they have touched.
They have shown love to.
How many ordinary things do you do every single day?
Now you can bring awareness to your feet if that feels right.
Your feet have carried you across rooms.
Down maybe so many sidewalks,
So many places,
So many stairs,
Through ordinary days,
Through difficult days.
To have brought you here.
And right now.
We don't have to take you anywhere.
They can simply just rest.
Now if you'd like.
Bring to mind one person.
Who has shared or contributed something to your life.
It doesn't have to be someone who did something huge.
It could be someone today who said hello and made you smile.
Maybe someone who listened.
Maybe someone who taught you something.
Maybe someone who showed up for you.
Maybe someone who gave you a meal,
A ride,
A kind word.
Just let this memory come back and let the gratitude flow if there is that feeling that comes up.
And noticing what happens in your body when you think of them.
Maybe there is warmth.
Maybe softness.
Maybe a smile.
Or maybe nothing noticeable at all.
There is nothing you need to create.
You can just notice.
And perhaps silently say thank you.
Now let that person fade into the background and notice the feeling itself.
Perhaps there's some warmth,
Some tenderness,
Some appreciation.
Maybe it's subtle and that's okay.
Sometimes gratitude is very quiet.
Now widen the circle.
Consider how much of your life is supported by other people.
The food you eat,
The water you drink.
The clothes you wear.
The places you live.
Roads that you travel.
Things you have learned.
So many things that make up this ordinary life have come through the hands,
Work,
Care and effort of other people.
People you'll never meet,
Maybe.
And then the same warmth and gratitude maybe offering it to yourself as well.
Sometimes this can be the hardest part so nothing needs to be forced.
Just considered it.
Maybe you can offer yourself a simple thank you.
Thank you for continuing.
Thank you for trying.
Thank you for being here.
And then.
.
.
Let the practice go.
As slowly as you need to.
No need to hold on to anything.
No need to keep the feeling going.
Just breathe.
Resting here for a few more breaths.
Nothing to fix,
Nothing to accomplish.
Just receiving this moment.
Thank you for taking this time for yourself today.
Thank you for practicing with me.
And I'll see you in the next meditation.
