The original name of this Buddhist practice is metta bhavana, which comes from the Pali language. Metta means ‘love’ (in a non-romantic sense), friendliness, or kindness: hence ‘loving-kindness’ for short. It is an emotion, something you feel in your heart. Bhavana means development or cultivation. It's a wonderful way to practice compassion for yourself and others. First you feel metta for yourself, than to someone you love dearly, then to someone you neither like nor dislike (this may be someone you don't know and are neutral towards), then towards someone you do not like and then to all creatures/planet/universe. I recommend practicing this until you know it by heart so that you can call on it at any time.
