Hello,

Hello,

Welcome to the Embodying Greatness podcast.

My name is Chris Delgado.

And in this week's episode,

I want to talk to you about building resilience and learning how to adapt to your environment through personal development,

Obviously through self development and why it's essential.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because listen,

We all have unexpected challenges and setbacks that happen in our lives.

And for me,

There's really two ways of handling when life is lifing at you.

And one of those ways is to really navigate through it with a growth mindset,

With a positive attitude,

With creative solutions,

Or the other way is or the other way is to become a victim to life and be at effect to what life is,

Quote unquote,

Throwing at you.

And if you're listening to this podcast,

I believe that even if we do step into that realm a little bit,

That's not where we want to be.

And that's not how we want to move through life moving forward.

So I want to give you a couple reasons why it's important.

And then of course,

How to start incorporating them in your daily life so that we can really start facing adversity and facing those difficult times with a positive mindset or growth mindset and really step into being solution oriented,

Instead of focusing on the problem,

Focusing on the solution.

Okay,

So again,

Change is inevitable in everyone's life,

Whether we're talking about changes in your career,

Changes in relationships,

Changes in your personal circumstances,

We're always what's that one saying,

Like,

The only thing that stays the same is change?

I don't know.

But you know what I'm saying?

The only thing that stays the same is change.

Don't quote me on that.

Or maybe I'm just making my own new quote.

The only thing that stays the same is change.

Quote Chris Delgado.

Anyway,

Developing adaptability really is going to allow you to embrace change with less resistance with having less fear,

And even maybe going through those changes with a smoother,

More manageable transition.

Another reason why we want to step into resilience is,

And this one's a big one for me is reducing our stress level and our anxiety.

So learning how to adapt to the situation,

Your environment will absolutely be able to help you manage stress more effectively.

This is something that I started practicing a lot in the last year,

I've noticed that I go through cycles of anxiety.

And when this first started happening to me,

I didn't realize what was happening.

And I wasn't listening to my own body,

And I wasn't listening to my intuition.

But more importantly,

When I was experiencing anxiety and stress,

I didn't have the ability to adapt to what was happening around me.

And I know that I was being a victim to my environment,

Being a victim to my circumstances,

And it did not serve me,

It didn't serve the space that I was occupying.

So I think this is such a big one,

And something that really I've started to embrace over the last 10 months or so.

So learning how to adapt to your environment and flowing through changes in your situations will allow you to bounce back from those hardships and have you feeling less overwhelmed,

Or less fear driven,

Less resistant.

So I think that's a big one,

Right?

It supports you in reducing stress and reducing anxiety.

That also then in turn enhances your mental health.

And then being able to cope with those challenges and setbacks can actually help you reduce the risk of anxiety in the first place,

Or depression or stress.

So having all of that in mind can have you move forward and reduce stress and anxiety even on a whole other level.

Also,

Being able to adapt to your environment or build a resilience,

Both of those are really closely linked together for emotional intelligence.

And I know that seems to be a buzzword lately,

You know,

Emotional intelligence or EQ,

And all of that,

Which is great.

By developing those qualities,

You can gain a deeper understanding of your emotions,

Which can lead to better self-regulation.

Once you step into that self-regulation,

Then that's going to affect all of the other relationships that come into your space.

So increasing your emotional intelligence is such a key factor for every other thing that happens in your life.

It's like a domino effect.

It's going to support you in making choices more effectively.

You know,

We all get into uncertain spaces,

Or we get into situations where we have to make quick decisions or quick changes and adapt.

So if you can access and zoom out on a macro and start accessing your ability to objectively look at what's happening,

What's actually going on in your space,

And then be open to trying new approaches to the same things that maybe you weren't open to before,

It's going to also increase your effectiveness in relationships with the people around you.

Which then leads us into the next one,

Which is gaining self-confidence.

As you start to successfully navigate through challenges,

And you start to realize that you can adapt to different circumstances,

Your self-confidence is going to grow.

You're going to start developing a deeper understanding or a belief in your ability to handle whatever comes your way.

And I think at the end of the day,

That's our goal,

Isn't it?

We all want to step into that self-worth,

That self-confidence,

And know that no matter what life is throwing at us,

We're going to successfully navigate through those challenges,

And we're going to adapt to whatever circumstances that are handed to us.

And then,

Of course,

That's going to build a better relationship,

Again,

With yourself,

Which is going to lead to healthier,

Deeper,

More juicy relationships with the people around you,

With your parents,

With your partners,

With your friends,

With your colleagues,

With your employees.

That just opens up a space in the professional realm.

It could lead you to professional advancement.

It's going to have people understand now that you are a highly valued person,

And people are going to want you in their space.

Employers are going to see people who can adjust to work environments,

Who can adjust and adapt to responsibilities.

If you're the owner of a company,

You now become an inspiration,

And you can be a mentor to people that you hire.

You can now show them how to build resilience and adaptability.

And then that's going to lead to greater opportunities.

It's going to lead to more success,

More fulfillment in your business.

So when you can overcome those circumstances or those obstacles,

And you can adapt to changes,

You're more than likely going to start taking more risks.

You're going to open yourself to new experiences.

You're going to go and explore the world more,

Which I say on this podcast all the time.

We want to learn and grow and explore this world together.

All of that becomes available when you understand,

At the end of the day,

That you can count on yourself.

You can count on yourself to navigate through those changes,

To adapt to anything that life hands you.

That's beautiful.

It's absolutely beautiful.

So those are some of the why we want to do those things.

Why is this important?

Why am I even having a podcast episode about this?

So now let's get into the how do we do that?

Because that sounds all really great,

Chris.

But how do we do this?

So I'm going to go over a few strategies,

A few things that you can implement.

And the number one thing is a mindset shift.

Growing or cultivating a growth mindset is going to have you understand that when challenges come that you can embrace those challenges.

Viewing them from having it be a problem into reframing it into a challenge.

Talked about that before on older episodes.

Viewing quote unquote failures as learning opportunities.

Believing in your ability to improve and expand on any situation that you come into.

Part of that growth mindset is understanding that when you have negative thoughts or you have negative thought patterns happening that you challenge them and you've replaced those with a growth mindset.

Sometimes we get very fixed.

We get stuck.

Understanding and being present to those moments.

So when you are stuck or when you're in a fixed mindset that you literally shift.

You become aware.

With awareness comes choice.

So you become aware like holy crap I'm stuck right now and I don't know what to do about this.

So you pause.

How can I reframe this moment to make this a learning opportunity for me?

It's not easy all the time,

But you can get there if you practice.

Another one is practicing mindfulness.

Having mindfulness practices,

Daily practices.

We talk about meditation a lot,

Deep breathing exercises,

All of those things are going to reduce your stress,

Reduce anxiety,

Which is then going to increase your emotional intelligence,

Your emotional fortitude.

And then when you're in that space,

You can respond to challenges more calmly from a different perspective.

Another how is build a support network.

Surround yourself with positive people who are like minded,

Who can provide encouragement to you,

Who understands what going through tough times is,

Who have been through those tough times before and made it out even stronger than before.

Having people around that will support you in processing emotions and helping you find solutions to problems if you can't.

If you need practice pausing and zooming out and looking at things at a macro level until you become versed at that,

Surround yourself with people who already can do that.

Ask your friends and family to support you in that.

Another one is learning from your past experiences.

Now I know that this one sounds really like,

Of course,

Chris,

We all know that,

But how many times do we do the same thing over and over and over expecting different results,

But always ending up with the same results.

Learning from your past experiences,

Reflect on the past.

What have you overcome before?

Recognize your strengths,

Recognize what your coping mechanisms are,

And understand how you handled them previously in moments where it worked.

And then also understand how you handled previous situations that got you right back into the same thing.

So both of those things are very distinct and equally powerful.

You want to go back and you want to reflect on what happened in the past,

Journal about or write down what you did,

The ways of being you were to overcome those with a positive outcome,

And then also do the same thing,

The ways of being,

The things that you were doing when you didn't have a positive outcome so that you see it black and white on paper.

I think that is a huge tool for us to use.

And I know that in all of my trainings and Thrive,

I have all of my coaching clients do that.

That's going to identify where you are.

It's going to identify the gap that you're in.

If you're having issues and you want to reframe them from problems to challenges,

Break those problems down into manageable steps.

Sometimes we look at problems and they seem so big,

But we can dissect that.

And if we can break that down into smaller,

More manageable steps,

It does something to our brain.

And now I can work on this.

I can break this down.

And all I have to do is work on this small part right now and trust that I'll work on the next part when it's time.

So breaking that down and making it more manageable for our brain to comprehend that this isn't this massive mountain,

It's also going to be a huge thing.

And staying curious.

Look for opportunities where you can continue to develop these skills because it just becomes a practice.

It's a practice and it might not be easy at first.

But again,

I always talk about it's like going to a gym.

All of those machines look super funky at first when you walk in,

But a month later you're doing it all the time and then it's a no brainer.

You know exactly what to do.

You get in there.

You have it happen because you've developed new skills.

It's the same thing for every other area of your life.

And then I think the last thing that I want to bring to you is celebrate.

Just a few episodes ago,

We had a whole episode on celebrating what's right in the world and celebrating your progress and acknowledging and celebrating,

No matter how small it is,

Is also going to support you in boosting your confidence.

It's going to help you maintain that motivation or that inspiration to keep moving forward.

So I want you to remember that building resilience and really adapting to your environment,

It's an ongoing process.

So it's going to be okay to face setbacks again.

Life is going to always life.

There's always going to be challenges.

There's always going to be things that look too big to overcome.

There's going to be moments where we think we're going to take,

You know,

One step forward and then three steps back.

Setbacks are going to happen.

It's okay.

You get to be patient with yourself and you get to focus on the progress.

I think there's a saying,

Progress over perfection.

Focus on your progress rather than the perfectionism.

Okay?

Perfectionism is a wasted energetic space to be in.

Remember,

Over time,

You're going to get skilled at all of these things.

They're going to become ingrained and then they become the new habits that you have formed.

You won't have to even think about.

They become the new way of being,

The new way of life for you.

Those are all of the ways that I have that can have you better equipped to handle life's ups and downs.

Expect that life is going to life.

Expect that there's going to be ups and downs.

Expect that sometimes you're going to have to setbacks.

It's all okay.

Building the resilience and adapting to those situations and you get to celebrate yourself every step of the way.
