Metta is a contemplative practice rooted in the Buddhist tradition of metta, or unconditional friendliness toward oneself and all beings. In this practice, we gently cultivate compassion by offering phrases of forgiveness and goodwill, first toward ourselves and then gradually extending them outward to others. The meditation begins by bringing awareness to the breath and settling the body into a posture of ease and stability. Once the mind becomes calm and present, we begin with self-forgiveness. From this place of self-compassion, the practice expands to include forgiving others. This does not mean condoning harmful actions or forcing reconciliation, but rather releasing the burden of resentment that weighs on the heart. The meditation naturally opens into loving kindness (metta), extending wishes of well-being first to ourselves, then to loved ones, neutral people, difficult people, and eventually to all beings everywhere.
