Hello and welcome.
This meditation is designed to support those brand new into the practice.
Whether you've tried it a few times or if this is your very first meditation,
This is for you.
I wish you a restorative,
Connected,
And refreshing practice.
First to help you settle as deeply as possible,
Take an inventory of anything that could distract you from your process.
Turn on the Do Not Disturb setting on your device,
Excuse yourself from anyone in your proximity,
Grab your headphones,
And shut the door if you can.
To position yourself,
I am not going to suggest you utilize any specific posture or hand placement.
This is a time to ensure that you can go inward over anything else.
So just find something that will allow comfort to be first.
You can lay down,
Sit in a chair,
Sit against a wall for support,
Or lean back with legs supported.
I recommend doing whatever will grant you the most time without any body signals of discomfort or need for adjustment.
Place your hands wherever feels most natural.
If you are seeking to receive energy,
Guidance,
Or support of some kind,
Place your palms face up.
If you are seeking grounding,
Calming,
Or a reconnection to your source,
Palms will face down.
To explain what meditation is,
I like to explain it using imagery.
I best understood it by acknowledging my thought life as the surface of the ocean or the water that falls from a waterfall,
Tumultuous,
Ever-flowing,
Moving,
And changing.
What meditation allows you to do is to step back into the space behind the water or sink below the surface of the ocean in the calm,
Dark solitude.
It allows you to still view it flowing,
But your presence and awareness has detached.
With that said,
You may notice you will still most likely have a thought life that occurs,
Especially when you begin a meditative practice.
Allow yourself to continue to step back or sink below to observe them from a detached place again and again.
There is nothing wrong if you find yourself back in the flow of thought.
Just gently guide yourself back behind the fall again.
Thought does slow as you continue this practice regularly,
So no need to force or will yourself to stop all thought.
As you can imagine,
Trying to stop a wave in an ocean or the falls from hitting the water below would be quite difficult.
We spend most of our lives in some form of thought,
Especially before we are aware it is separate from us.
To illustrate this through experience,
Imagine a fire burning before you.
It is nighttime in the middle of the desert.
You gaze into a flame.
Imagine gathering every thought you have ever had.
Gather it into a ball in your hand.
Now throw it into the fire.
It disappears into it.
Do you still exist?
Next,
Gather everything you've ever felt.
Every emotion or feeling you have ever experienced.
Ball it up and throw it just the same into the flame to evaporate into nothingness.
Do you still exist?
Now gather your identity,
Your labels,
Personality,
Relationships,
Experiences,
Belongings,
Credit lines,
Bills,
Addresses,
Phone numbers,
Your history,
And any documentation of you here in this life and throw it into the fire.
Do you still exist?
You'll find that you do.
You are the being behind all of this.
Not the thought,
But the thinker.
Not the feeling,
But the feeler.
Not the one who has done,
Said,
Or is anything,
But the being who went through those outer experiences and still remains through them.
This,
This is who we will find and connect with.
The absolute you.
Now dear one,
It is time to begin.
Close your eyes.
With your whole body,
Take in a breath.
Take this breath from your nose all the way to the tips of your fingers and toes.
And with your whole body,
Release it back from the tips of your toes and fingers back out into the air.
Use this breath and imagine drawing pure stillness from the top of your head to the soles of your feet.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
If you find that your awareness has drawn nearer to the static and busyness of thought,
Gently notice and give this reflexive moment your acknowledgement and guide yourself back.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Drift back.
Sink down.
Allow and surrender to the stillness.
It is not something you make happen or will into being.
Simply let what is busy move away from you as you organically settle.
This is your natural state.
You possess this ability without effort.
You do not need to try to force or grip.
Merely ease and let go.
Your being knows this from before birth or life on this earth.
Let that surface within you.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Let what is busy move away.
Fall further beneath the surface.
Observe any thought that shows.
Acknowledge and let it flow through you and back away.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
My voice is going to fade to allow you to move through the process.
Allow yourself to fully move into the flow of your breath and in the silence and natural stillness of you.
Gently coming back into your body now.
Take a deep breath in and release.
And when you are ready,
Open your eyes to the room.
