In this series, Kapi’olani discusses Part 2 of 6: Prayer, Visioning, & Pursuit of Harmony of the Native Hawaiian practice of ho’oponopono. This includes lecture and written reflection questions at the end. Ho`oponopono is a communication practice that comes from the Hawaiian islands, it is meant to restore balance and harmony between individuals and groups. This is not ho’oponpono, but, a useful tool supporting individual reflection and preparing partners and groups for challenging discussions.

Part 2,

Prayer,

Visioning,

And the Pursuit of Finding Balance.

This is part 2 of a six-part series titled Ho'oponopono,

A Native Hawaiian practice.

The Ho'oponopono process formally begins with a neutral facilitator or a haku,

H-A-K-U.

These are spiritual healers who are able to guide with the spirit of love for all and their purpose is to tie everyone together again.

The formal meaning of haku means to weave together.

The haku opens up with a prayer to ancestors,

Family guides,

Or a mokua to ask for guidance and the capacity to develop resilience,

Courage,

And strength.

Here you can call on your creator,

God,

Or whomever you develop resiliency,

Courage,

And strength from in this practice.

Prayers in many ways act as intentions that form the direction of our wishes,

Goals,

Or desires for ourselves and for each other.

The haku is gifted at weaving together a shared set of intentions that align to a common and shared purpose.

The haku understands the deep nature of relationships,

Of the balance between two different natures,

And the combination that caused the ebb and flow of our ability to connect to humans,

To nature,

And to non-humans.

In Ho'oponopono,

There are deep spiritual and esoteric meanings behind who we are as human and how we connect to land,

People,

And place.

This is known in Hawaiian as kauna,

The deep wisdom or knowing that lay beneath a simple word.

Our happiness and sadness are joy and distress.

It is this type of understanding that we mimic nature and its ebb and flow of light and dark,

Good,

Bad,

Hardship,

And joy.

But much like a river,

Our attention goes where our intention flows.

In the remainder of this lecture,

I'll invite questions for individual reflection.

What intention or prayer will I set for the health of the relationship and the well-being of the other?

What intention or prayer will I set for myself and my own individual relationship with myself and my personal well-being?

Who inspires me?

Who can I think of?

And what would I need to hear from them when I'm experiencing confusion,

Sadness,

Or frustration?

Name or list a person or people that you can be reminded of and think of statements that might help you persevere when discomfort arrives.

You can write statements or visit my Insight Meditation on bridging mindfulness with written words of empowerment for more support.

And finally,

What will your group or partner need to gather for strengthening the bond during this challenging moment of the healing process?

You can work with your group members or partner to review this.

When this is accomplished,

I encourage you and others who are part of this process to share thoughts alongside a facilitator or a haku.

Join me in part three naming and stating the problem.

Mahalo.

Thank you.
