Welcome dear one.
This is a place for the nights when the body is weary.
Yet rest doesn't come easily.
Place for the night when pain follows you beneath the blankets.
When fear remains close to the surface.
When the darkness seems to make every sensation feel a little louder.
And tonight nothing has been asked of you.
There is nothing you need to achieve,
Nothing you need to overcome,
Nothing you need to understand before you are permitted to rest.
You don't need to create a perfect sense of calm.
You don't need to empty your mind.
You don't need to convince your body to feel safe before it is ready.
You have arrived exactly as you are.
Carrying everything this day has placed upon you.
And for these next few moments,
You don't have to carry it alone.
Allow yourself to settle as comfortably as your body permits.
Comfort may not mean the complete absence of pain.
Tonight,
Comfort simply means finding the position that asks the least of you.
The pillows can be adjusted.
The blankets can be gathered around you.
And a soft light can remain on.
Music can play continually nearby.
There is no correct way to prepare for rest.
There is only the way that offers your body a little more kindness.
Feel the surface beneath you.
Notice how it remains steady even when your body can't completely soften into it.
The bed is holding the weight of your head.
It is holding your shoulders.
That's holding you back.
Your hips,
Your legs,
And your feet.
You don't have to hold yourself above it.
You don't have to brace every part of yourself at once.
The bed is here.
The room is here.
The familiar walls are standing around you.
And the floor remains beneath everything.
Your surroundings hold the evidence of your life,
The things you have chosen,
The objects you have touched,
The books you have opened,
The cups you have held.
The small rituals that have carried you through so many days,
Your life is still here with you.
Allow the breath to remain natural.
There's no need to take a deep breath.
If a deep breath feels uncomfortable or forced.
Just notice the next breath as it arrives.
And notice the breath that follows it.
Each one comes quietly.
Without needing to be summoned.
The breath enters.
The breath leaves.
The body continues its ancient rhythm.
Even now.
Even after a difficult day.
Even when you are tired of being brave.
Maybe the exhale can become just a fraction longer.
Not because it must calm you,
Not because it must remove the pain,
Just because there is nowhere else you need to hurry towards tonight.
Small Britain.
Slow breath out.
A small breath in.
A gentle breath out.
Let the breath be a soft tide beside you,
Moving in and moving away.
You don't have to follow it anywhere,
You can simply listen to its return.
Now imagine that the room around you is slowly filling with a warm muted light,
Not a bright light,
Not a light that asks you to wake up or become alert.
This is the glow of an old bedside lamp in a room where a loving presence has remained awake with you.
It is golden,
Low and gentle.
It touches the edges of the furniture.
It rests upon the blankets.
It settles around your body without pressing against it.
This light doesn't enter the places that feel too tender.
Doesn't attempt to heal,
Change or correct them,
Just stays nearby.
It bears witness without judgement.
It knows that some pain can't be breathed away.
It knows that exhaustion can exist beside hope.
It knows that courage doesn't always feel powerful.
Sometimes courage is simply getting through another hour.
Sometimes courage is making the careful movement that the body requires.
Sometimes courage is asking for help.
Sometimes courage is returning to bed and beginning again.
And within this warm light there is nothing you need to prove.
You have already endured moments that others may fully understand.
And other moments where they never understand.
You have lived inside your uncertainty.
You have listened carefully to every change within your body.
You have carried fears that became heavier when night arrives.
You have waited for relief that has not come as quickly as you hoped.
You have continued even when continuing felt terribly unfair.
And tonight.
You're allowed to be tired of it.
You're allowed to be disappointed.
You're allowed to wish that things were different.
These feelings don't disturb the meditation.
They belong here too.
They can sit beside you without taking over the whole night.
Imagine now that night itself is no longer a vast and empty darkness.
Instead it becomes a deep indigo shore.
Embroidered with tiny silver threads.
The shawl is lowered around your shoulders.
It carries the softness of moonlight and the warmth of every loving thought ever sent in your direction.
Doesn't weigh heavily.
That rests slightly around you.
And along its edge are small silver stars,
Each one holding the presence of someone who cares for you.
Some may live nearby.
Some may be only a message or a telephone call away.
Some maybe sleeping beneath another sky.
Some may be connected to you through memory,
Love and the invisible pathways of the heart.
Distance doesn't remove their care.
Silence doesn't mean that you have been forgotten.
Love remains within every practical act of kindness.
It remains in the food prepared for you.
It remains in the medicine placed within reach.
It remains in the message sent to check that you are alright.
It remains in the people who remember you,
Even when the night feels long.
It remains in every act that quietly sees your well-being matters.
You're not alone in the night.
You are held within a web of human tenderness.
You are held by those who care for you.
You are held by the familiar room around you.
You are held by the bird beneath you.
You're held by the rhythm of your breath.
And you are held by this voice for as long as you need.
Bring awareness to your body now.
There's no need to travel through every part of it.
There's no need to scan for tension or search for what is wrong.
Just allow your awareness to rest first on a place that feels neutral.
Perhaps the warmth beneath your hands.
Maybe the softness beneath your head.
Perhaps the touch of the blanket against your skin.
Maybe the coolness of the air as it passes near your face.
Let this neutral place become a small resting point.
An island within the body.
Nothing miraculous needs to happen here.
It is just a place that doesn't demand quite so much attention.
Rest your awareness upon it for a few breaths.
The painful places may continue to call.
They may pulse,
Ache,
Tighten,
Burn,
Feel restless.
No need to deny their presence.
There is also no need to enter deeply into them.
Imagine placing a little space around each tender place.
Not inside it.
Around it.
Soft border of air,
A ring of warmth.
Enough room for the pain to exist without becoming the whole of you.
You are experiencing pain,
But you are more than the pain.
You are the hands that have created,
Held and comforted.
You are the voice that is laughed,
Spoken and shared.
You with a heart that has offered love,
Even while needing comfort of its own.
You are a memory.
Imagination,
Humour,
Tenderness and love and hope.
You are the dance of breath.
Thought,
Spirit and imagination.
You are the part that continues to notice beauty,
Even when life has become difficult.
Tonight,
You don't have to turn your pain into wisdom.
You don't have to make something meaningful from it.
You don't have to be grateful for what it has taught you.
Tonight,
Pain is simply pain.
Weariness is simply weariness.
And you are a human being deserving of tenderness within both.
Now imagine that beside the bed stands a small wooden table.
Upon it is an old ceramic bowl,
Glazed in the colors of moonlight.
This is a resting bowl.
It has been placed here to hold everything that doesn't need to remain in your hands until morning.
You don't have to release these things forever.
You don't have to surrender control of anything important.
You are just allowing the bowl to watch over them for a few hours.
Into the bowl goes the fear of waking in pain.
Into the bowl goes the worry about needing to move during the night.
Into the bowl goes the vigilance that listens to every sensation.
Into the bowl goes the disappointment of another day,
Without the relief you had hoped for.
Into the bowl goes the tiredness that has reached beyond the body and settled into the spirit.
Into the bowl go the tasks that remain unfinished.
Into the bowl go the thoughts that have circled without finding somewhere to land.
They will remain safe here.
Nothing precious will be lost.
Nothing important will be forgotten.
The bowl will keep watch until morning.
There's no need to force your hands to become empty.
Even loosening your grip by the smallest amount is enough.
Tonight doesn't require complete surrender.
Just a little less holding is enough.
A little less guarding is enough.
One moment in which you don't have to plan for the next moment is enough.
Outside the window,
Imagine a great silver moon suspended over the sleeping world,
And its pale light rests upon rooftops,
Trees,
Mountains and roads.
And it shines upon those you love.
Wherever they may be.
That reaches across cities,
Countries,
And oceans.
It touches hospital rooms,
Quiet bedrooms and homes where someone else is also waiting for sleep.
The same moonlight falls upon countless people who understand the long hours of night.
People living with pain.
People moving through uncertainty.
People trying to rest while part of them remains watchful.
And beneath this wide and ancient sky,
You are part of a beautiful human circle.
You may never know their names.
They may never know yours.
Yet tonight,
You rest beneath the same moon.
You breathe beneath the same darkness.
And you wait together for morning.
The moon doesn't ask the night to become day.
It doesn't fight the darkness.
It offers only enough light for the next small piece of the path.
And that's all that's needed now.
Not the strength for tomorrow.
The answers for the weeks ahead.
Only enough light for this breath.
Only enough steadiness for this moment.
Only enough softness to lie here without abandoning yourself.
If sleep arrives,
It is welcome.
If sleep remains distant,
You are still resting.
If the body becomes uncomfortable and you need to move,
The meditation hasn't been broken.
If you need to open your eyes,
Adjust the blankets,
Reach for water,
Or carefully rise from the bed,
Nothing has gone wrong.
You can return whenever you are ready.
Rest is not a test that can be failed.
The knight is not keeping score.
The golden light beside you begins to grow softer now.
It gathers close to the edges of the bed,
Forming a boundary around your resting place.
And within this boundary nothing is expected from you.
No messages need to be answered.
Decisions need to be made.
No one needs to be reassured.
No one needs you to appear stronger than you feel.
For now,
The giver of comfort is permitted to receive comfort.
The one who carries others is permitted to be carried.
The one who soften,
So often finds the words as allowed to rest within the gentle words of another.
A soft presence sits beside you.
Maybe it feels like moonlight.
Maybe it feels like someone you have loved.
Maybe it's simply the compassionate part of you that has remained through every difficult night.
This present doesn't arrive with promises.
It doesn't tell you that everything will be different by morning.
It doesn't ask you to look on the bright side.
It just remains.
Its presence carries no urgency.
A hand rests close to yours.
A voice becomes low and steady.
You don't have to be fearless tonight.
You don't have to be strong in every moment.
You don't have to make peace with a body that may have frightened or disappointed you.
You need only remain here.
One breath at a time.
And this presence will remain too.
The night deepens,
The room settles,
The sounds of the day grow distance and your body is allowed to take whatever rest is available to it.
Even if the muscles don't fully soften.
Even if the thoughts continue to wander.
Even if sleep comes in small fragments.
Every quiet moment.
When your still belongs to you.
Every gentle breath still counts.
Every minute spent lying beneath the warmth of the blankets is a small act of care.
Let these words begin to move more slowly now.
There's nowhere else to go.
Nothing else to become.
The breath comes in.
The breath moves out.
The bed remains beneath you.
The room remains around you.
The moon remains above you.
Love remains connected to you.
And for this moment you are safe enough to rest.
For this breath you are held.
For this night,
You are accompanied.
The pain doesn't have to disappear for tenderness to reach you.
The fear doesn't have to disappear for companionship to find you.
The thoughts don't have to disappear for the night to carry you.
You have done enough for today.
More than enough.
The unfinished things can wait beyond the doorway of mourning.
The words can wait,
The plans can wait,
The responsibilities can wait.
Every part of your life that requires your attention can wait while you rest.
Nothing needs to be solved in the darkness.
The indigo shawl of night is drawn a little closer.
The silver stahas along its edges shimmer softly.
The moonlight settles over your feet.
The golden glow rests beside your heart.
And the old ceramic bowl keeps watch over everything you have placed within it.
You don't need to retrieve any of it,
Yet.
The bowler's strong.
The knight is patient.
And morning knows how to find you.
So rest now in whatever way your body allows.
Drift if you can,
Listen if you need,
Move if you must.
Begin again whenever the moment asks you to.
Nothing has been spoiled.
Nothing has been failed.
You are still held.
You're not alone in the night.
You are not forgotten in the quiet.
You are not a burden because you need care.
You are not weak because you are tired.
You are not failing because healing has taken longer than you hope.
You are here.
You are worthy of tenderness.
You are accompanied.
And for now,
That is enough.
May the room remain peaceful around you.
May the beds support you gently.
May the night pass softly one small hour at a time.
May sleep find you without being chased.
May rest gather around you even in the spaces between sleep.
May every awakening be met with patience.
And may every return to the pillow feel like a new beginning.
And may morning meet you gently when it arrives.
There is nothing more you need to do.
Let the music continue.
Let the breath continue.
Let the night hold what you can't hold any longer.
You're not alone.
You are not forgotten.
You are not alone in the night.
Sleep softly,
Dear one.
Held by the night.
Until the morning finds you.
