Measuring Our Emotional Body
by Jill Lemke
This meditation is a representation of our emotional body. It is a way to observe our emotions as a whole and a physical representation of what that whole looks like when/if we are depleted. I use water as a way of representing the emotional body. If you have an aversion to water, this may not be the meditation for you.

Hello and welcome to my meditation podcast,
Breaking Beyond Guided Meditation.
Well,
Hello and welcome to episode 201.
Can't even believe I have 201 episodes already.
It feels like yesterday that I began broadcasting.
So welcome to today's meditation.
Today's meditation is about observing our emotional body.
And what does that look like?
There are a lot of ways to sort of measure your emotional state and in a physical way that's outside of yourself.
For example,
You could put rice in a clear jar and remove some of that rice as a physical representation to see what happens when this happens to me and how much rice is removed and what is left of me.
The problem with using the same sort of form for everyone is each of us measures our emotional bodies differently.
And when I say that,
I mean that some of us are very expressive people.
Some of us show our emotions easily and readily and all the time.
And some of us are quite introverted.
Do not share how we're feeling.
Do not become overly emotional.
Tend to be a bit stoic.
And so this meditation today I think is a good representation of everyone because you're seeing for yourself what your emotional body looks like and bringing that greater awareness to yourself.
We do that through looking at a body of water.
And water is a great representation of our emotional state.
If you dream about water,
If you are looking at water in your meditation,
If you're subconscious really coming in to show you what your emotional state is like.
So when we're observing ourselves in the meditation today,
I want you to consider a couple of things.
How large the body of water is and this can be a couple of things.
It could be that you are very self-confident that even if you are depleted,
You are still very full.
Think of the ocean.
If I take five gallons of water from the ocean,
It's not going to seem like a lot.
It's not going to make a big dent in the ocean because for myself,
I'm a very confident person.
But confidence comes with a lot of hard work though and love for self.
Now if your body of water is a bathtub and you take five gallons of water out,
You are going to see significant depletion.
And it doesn't necessarily mean that that body of water means you're not emotional.
It's just a reflection of the state that you are currently in.
It could also be that anything that's taken from that small body of water is significant to you.
So this could also mean that you're a sensitive person.
So really,
Today's meditation is about an awareness around your emotional state,
Awareness about any sort of depletion,
How that might affect that emotional state or that body of water and then in the end,
We refill it,
We refuel and what does that look like and how does that feel?
And so as always,
I want you to take this as just a deeper state of awareness of your emotional self and as you use that as a takeaway to also of course encourage healing and wholeness in you.
Now if you love my podcast,

Enjoy today's meditation.
Take a nice deep breath in all the way down to the belly and slowly exhale.
Nice deep breath in and slowly exhale.
Last one.
Deep breath in and slowly exhale.
Go ahead and relax your breath.
Bring back this nice natural flow through the body,
Keeping it low in the belly.
Go and relax your shoulders,
Keeping your spine nice and straight.
Feel those shoulders relax.
Feel that relaxation move down your arms all the way to the ends of your fingers.
Go ahead and release your jaw.
Relax those muscles in your jaw.
Just feel that breath moving through the body,
Nice even flow.
That breath coming in and going out should feel very much like an ocean wave,
That same rhythm.
Perhaps you can hear the waves in your ears as you're breathing in and breathing out.
Really becoming present with yourself,
Observing that breath,
Keeping it low in the belly,
Feeling that belly expand and retract.
All those external busy thoughts just get pushed to the side,
Just focused on our breath.
We're gonna begin our meditation today by visualizing our cells standing on the edge of water.
This water can be anything.
It can be the ocean.
It can be a lake or a pond,
Stream.
It can be rainwater rushing by a gutter.
It can be anything.
Allow your mind to take you there.
Feel your feet on the ground,
Allowing yourself to be truly present.
Sometimes it helps to begin this visualization from the feet up.
So as you feel yourself on the ground,
You gradually bring in the details around you as if slowly lifting your head,
Looking at the scene around you.
And the water you're standing next to,
We're just observing it.
One full body of water moving together.
Somewhere near you,
You'll have some sort of tool,
A bowl,
Glass,
Something that you'll have the ability to scoop the water up,
Taking part of it out of this body and setting it next to you.
We're removing some of the water.
The body of water still looks the same.
Still moves and flows together.
You don't really notice any difference.
Of course,
The amount of water we took is small.
Depending on the size of the body of water you're standing next to,
Could still be a significant amount.
I want you to look at that body of water as a representation of yourself.
Water is a good indicator of our emotional situation,
Emotional state.
Where your water is calm.
Is it a large body of water?
Small body of water?
When you take some of the water away,
It's like releasing some of our power,
Our personal power.
Small bits here and there don't appear to make that much difference to the whole.
But if we continue to release this energy,
Let go of our personal power,
You can begin to see how quickly we've become depleted.
As you're standing along the water's edge,
I want you to hear thunder in the distance.
As you look to the sky,
You'll see the rolling,
Darkening clouds beginning to make their way over you.
Rain begins to fall from the sky,
Slowly at first.
I want you to stay exactly where you are,
Feeling the droplets at your skin,
Watching the rain on the water's surface,
Making ripples all the way across,
That rain replenishing,
Cleansing and refreshing,
Renewing and replenishing the water that's been taken,
And then some.
This is what it's like to be around others who fuel us,
Pour into us,
Give back to us.
Those small droplets make big ripples,
The surface of the water completely changes.
The rain begins to move,
Rolling clouds pass over,
Sky becomes clear again.
You can feel the warmth of the sun on your skin.
I want you to step into the water.
You can go in as far as you like,
Maybe up to your ankles or fully submerging your body so that you're there floating on the surface,
Feeling your body gently rocked in the waves.
I just want you to be for a few moments.
Enjoy the quiet.
Enjoy the coolness of the water.
Enjoy the calmness of the water.
Enjoy the calmness of the water.
Enjoy the calmness of the water.
I want you to stand fully upright in the water and notice close by your feet,
There's an object.
It's only something to observe.
We're not taking it with us.
Just an extra layer might give you some clarity around your emotional body.
I want you to step back out of the water,
Returning to the water's edge where you began.
I want you to look at the bowl of water or the cup or whatever you put the water in from before and return it back so this body of water is whole again.
Feeling your feet firmly on the ground.
I want you to take a nice deep breath in and slowly exhale.
Bring your hands into heart center in prayer position.
Just take a moment for reflection.
Maybe solidify those images in your mind or start your day with an affirmation.
Take a nice deep breath in.
Slowly exhale.
I want you to take a nice deep breath in.
