Let's chat new moon energy right?
So what is it?
How do we tune into it?
What kind of rituals or ceremony or spells do we get into?
This talk is for anybody who's interested in the new moon and working with the new moon whether you're a witch,
Witch curious,
Or witchy.
All are welcome here.
My name is Jenny Siebel.
I am the author of Divergent Witchcraft,
An inclusive approach to making magic and in that book I have an entire chapter on working with the moon.
So let's talk about the new moon.
The new moon is also known as the dark moon.
So if you were to go outside and look for the moon you won't find her and that's significant.
Now I want to share some things that I think are kind of interesting.
So traditionally when I was a witch at first in like the 90s early 2000s many of the books I had said that we do not practice magic on the new moon.
That it was called the dark moon and that you just didn't do magic.
You could do magic on the next night which would be the waning or the waxing moon right when the moon is starting to grow.
You can do magic on the night before when the moon was in its final stage of waning and it's diminishing but the new moon people were saying don't do it.
So I did not really do anything with the new moon.
Fast forward to the 2000s,
The later 2000s and the new age movement and us having more,
Astrology becoming more attainable right.
Us having astrologers on Instagram and TikTok and YouTube and podcasts and being able to really get a grasp on astrology and having astrologers talk to us weekly and astrology and also the new age movement both talk about the using the new moon's energy to manifest.
It's really interesting.
So as a witch started to think about this the new moon is the absence in the sky right.
She's there we don't but you know a lot of witchcraft is,
Witchcraft is sympathetic like we do things to mirror other things right.
So if the moon is absent then it's like a clean slate and so in my view how we work with a new moon is by doing things that we would like to do as a fresh slate.
So this could be that you want to kind of lean into the previous energy of the waning moon which is diminishing and cleansing and release,
Not necessarily releasing but cleansing and letting go and cutting cords and that kind of energy.
The other side of this coin and the new moon coin is to treat it as the beginning of the waxing moon and so in that case it's manifesting time.
It's time to write your manifestations down.
It's time to goal set.
It's time to look towards the future.
It's time to you know begin to step into the new cycle.
Neither one of these approaches is wrong or right.
It's really I think up to the individual and it also might be up to how you are feeling.
You know every new moon is under a different astrological sign and that could be something that you decide to add to your practice and get more into astrology and you're like okay this is a new moon in Taurus.
New moon in Taurus if you begin something you're most likely to finish it.
Okay I want to manifest this right.
That's one approach but you can also just go with how you're feeling.
The new moon arises and you're like man I really am tired.
I need to let some things go and that's the way you practice it and it neither way is wrong,
Neither way is right.
It's totally an individual path.
That's the beauty of witchcraft is it's individual.
It's using your intuition.
It's empowering right.
For me personally I treat the new moon as a time as a reset.
So it's a lot like if you are on social media you'll see first of the month.
You'll see witches blowing cinnamon on their door and cleansing their door and doing all this thing.
That's the same energy of the new moon and in fact I feel like it's a stronger energy because we're not following this calendar that's kind of arbitrary.
Instead we're following the lunar calendar.
So to me new moon is when I cleanse.
I usually do a smoke cleanse of the house using rosemary or mugwort are my two favorite or a simmer pot because we I live where I live there is a smoke season.
So I'll do a simmer pot with cinnamon,
Rosemary,
Orange or lemon,
Some cloves and you know really stir in tension in always put salt in there as well.
So I always start new moon I'm going to cleanse the space and then from there I also cleanse like my ritual jewelry and things like that.
From there I decide okay the space is cleansed.
Let me cleanse my energy.
So I check in with my own energy.
I sit in meditation.
I decide you know what is it I need.
Do I need to cut cords?
Do I need to take a selenite wand and cleanse my aura?
Do I need to kind of work on healing chakras?
Like what is it that my energy is saying?
Where am I imbalanced?
What do I need and do I need to cleanse that energy?
And a lot of times I do.
So then I'll cleanse my energy.
From there once the house is cleaned,
The cleanse,
The energy of myself is cleansed,
I turn towards how am I feeling?
Like is this a new moon?
I want to write some things down to manifest.
Do I want to make a grid,
A crystal grid?
Do I want to you know make some tinctures?
I tend to do a lot of my herbalism begin tinctures and begin things like that on new moons.
It's just my preference.
You know what is it?
Do I want to start something?
Do I want to let something go?
How am I feeling?
And that's where I go from there and I invite you to do the same thing.
I personally don't make moon water at a new moon.
It doesn't make sense to me because there's no moon there but some people do that and that's fine.
I just it doesn't like I don't see it so it doesn't make sense to me.
That's just a personal preference but it's a time of either endings or fresh beginnings because that's really the same thing right and every ending is a beginning and every beginning there's an ending.
So it's this opportunity for you to decide and each one might be different.
Tune in,
Pay attention to yourself and just know that when there are eclipses the energy is different and you may not want to do anything and that's okay too.
So I hope you enjoy your next new moon.
