Here is an uncomfortable truth.
Healing is not linear.
And I think part of the reason this catches people so off guard is that we have collectively agreed to only share the highlight reel of personal growth.
The breakthroughs,
The aha moments,
The before and after.
Nobody posts about the Tuesday three weeks after the breakthrough when they cried in the car for reasons they could not quite explain and wondered if any of the work they had done actually meant anything.
But that Tuesday happens to almost everyone.
And when it does,
The conclusion most people draw is,
I am back at square one.
I have regressed.
Something is wrong with me.
I thought I had dealt with this.
You have not regressed,
My friend.
And you are not back at square one.
Here is a more accurate picture of how healing actually works.
It's not a straight line moving upward.
It's a spiral.
You pass through the same themes,
The same tender spots,
The same old fears,
The same familiar patterns again and again,
But going upward.
And each time you pass through them,
You are doing so from a slightly higher vantage point,
With slightly more awareness,
Slightly more capacity,
And slightly more of yourself intact.
The moment that looks like regression is actually just a spiral coming back around.
And the fact that it feels different this time,
That you can name it,
That you recover faster,
That you do not completely lose yourself in it the way you once did,
That is growth.
Quiet,
Unsexy,
Real growth.
The other thing nobody tells you about healing is that it is not a destination.
There is no moment where you arrive,
Dust yourself off,
And declare yourself finished,
Done.
The work becomes the life.
And at some point,
If you stay with it long enough,
That stops feeling like a burden and starts feeling like the most interesting thing about being alive.
So the next time a hard day follows a good week,
Do not measure your progress by how you feel on the hard day.
Measure it by how you respond,
By how quickly you find your way back,
By whether you treat yourself with even a little more compassion than you did last time.
That is the whole game.
And you are playing it better than you think.
