Welcome to a deep dive into the metaphysical meaning of the Earth Mother archetype,
Embodied in tooth 14,
The upper left first molar,
Its adjacent gum,
Or in the space where the tooth would be,
If it's a missing tooth.
Tooth archetypes are a way to interpret oral health symptoms which occur in a specific part of the mouth.
The archetypes link each individual tooth with strengths that support it to be healed and healthy,
And vulnerabilities which can influence how a tooth might succumb to ill health.
The archetypes are signposts for the emotional or energetic root cause of almost all oral health symptoms that can be traced back to secrets,
Silences,
Or suppressed emotions.
The archetypes for symptomatic teeth can help you to identify where such suppression is affecting your life.
The strength of the Earth Mother archetype is empathy,
And its vulnerabilities may include negative body image,
Restrictive diets,
Or disconnection from the natural world.
In this talk,
I'll explain how the Earth Mother Archetype fits into the number 14 tooth's place in the mouth as a way to explain the logic of its primary themes and relationships.
I'll also offer interpretations of different symptoms common to this tooth and suggest strategies for using the Earth Mother Archetype to support the health of the tooth,
Your whole mouth,
And even your general well-being.
If you're not already familiar with metaphysical approaches to healing in general,
Or the tooth archetype framework specifically,
You might like to pause to first listen to my lecture called Tooth Archetypes,
Which introduces key concepts from my book,
The Secret Lives of Teeth.
This will give you valuable background information,
Including key considerations to keep you safe as you explore the Earth Mother Tooth Archetype.
Most importantly,
If you are in serious pain,
Have a fever or swelling around this or any tooth,
You need to prioritise dental care before metaphysical healing.
What I'm discussing should be considered complementary rather than alternative health.
Also,
Please do not use this discussion of metaphysical influences on physical health to blame or shame anyone,
Including you.
Let's put the Earth Mother archetype in context as your upper,
Left,
First molar.
Teeth located on the left side of your mouth tend to respond to relationships with women,
Your most intimate relationships,
Your personal behavior,
And your private thoughts.
This is the side of the mouth which is involved when you have a gut feeling,
When you act on your emotions,
Or you speak from the heart.
With its location in the upper jaw,
This tooth represents your past and your background.
The Earth Mother tooth is on the upper left side of the mouth,
So it may be particularly linked with your mother's influence when you were young.
Or with your mother's side of the family,
Or with your lineage through either of your grandmothers.
As one of the four first molars,
It may represent your status,
Particularly within your family of origin or your mother's side of the family.
Opposite the Earth Mother Tooth is your lower left first molar,
The Home Tooth archetype.
Together,
These two teeth provide grounding and stability.
They are both foundational and nourishing.
The Earth Mother and Home archetypes are both sensitive to how you feel a sense of belonging and safety.
They are distinguished from each other,
Firstly,
Because the Earth Mother Tooth's place in the upper jaw includes the environment of homeland including the landscape and culture of your childhood or family background.
It holds on to your feelings and beliefs about the idea of home.
Earth Mother also responds to the land that you live on now and its non-human life.
In the lower jaw the home archetype tends to respond to a more contained and current experience.
It may reflect your living situation right now or any of the homes you've lived often as an independent adult.
The Earth Mother archetype is sensitive to the qualities and themes of both adjacent teeth in the upper jaw.
The Knight archetype,
Which is the second molar towards the back of your mouth,
And the harvest archetype,
That second pre-molar in front.
The Earth Mother Archetype shares with the Knight Archetype a vulnerability to being overlooked and underestimated,
But the Earth Mother has a self-sufficient quality that the Knight Archetype lacks.
The Harvest Tooth shares with the Earth Mother the most primal relationship of being mothered and nourished.
Earth Mother's equivalent tooth type on the right is the Sun Archetype,
The upper right first molar.
The sun tooth is concerned with beliefs about the work of providing,
While the earth mother is concerned with how you receive nourishment and support.
Now that we've looked at tooth 14's relationship with the teeth around it,
Let's get to know the unique meanings of the Earth Mother archetype.
The three main themes of the Earth Mother archetype are 1.
Relationship with your natural environment,
2.
Relationship with your mother or a mother figure,
And 3.
Trauma related to food.
The famous story of the Greek goddess Demeter illustrates all three of these themes.
Demeter's job among her family of deities was to propagate plants,
Nurture crops and feed the world.
World,
Which she did with lavish abundance,
Day after day,
All year round,
Until her beloved daughter Persephone went missing.
Demeter was devastated and stopped caring for crops.
Instead,
She frantically searched for her lost daughter while the earth became barren.
Eventually,
Demeter learned that her brother Hades had kidnapped Persephone,
And trafficked her into the underworld to be his unwilling consort.
Demeter's outrage at this crime was trivialised by the rest of her family,
Including Zeus,
Who was not only the king of the gods,
But also Demeter's brother and Persephone's father.
Desolate,
Demeter roamed the world in a state of grief and rage,
Resolutely boycotting her work of growing food for harvest.
As a result,
Famine swept through humanity.
Soon people stopped sacrificing food to the gods and it was this affront that finally got Zeus to take Demeter's concerns seriously.
He arranged for Persephone to be rescued and returned to her mother.
Demeter was so overjoyed to be reunited with Persephone that her happiness spilled over into a riot of new life all through the land.
Trees burst into leaf and bloom,
And crops began to germinate in the fields.
Once again,
There was enough food for everyone.
The natural world.
The Earth Mother Tooth can embody your relationship with the natural environment.
It may represent your trust in Mother Earth as a primal source of nourishment and support.
It reminds you that your body depends on your place in wider living systems and your personal health is intertwined with the health of the planet.
This tooth can be sensitive to your feelings about pollution,
Extinction,
Climate change,
And other damage inflicted by humans on the natural world.
Some of the ways your body might feel distant from nature,
Even if you don't consciously think about it,
Include walking on mostly pavements,
Or wearing high heels,
Or even thick,
Sold shoes.
Hours spent looking at screens for work,
Leisure,
And social interaction.
Diets dominated by shelf-stable,
Heavily processed,
Industrialised foods.
Food.
Spending all your time inside buildings and vehicles that insulate you from weather and natural light.
The Earth Mother archetype offers guidance and wisdom grounded in nature.
She wants to teach you or remind you how to live with nature and how to fully integrate your inner wildness instead of treating it as an embarrassment or an afterthought.
She offers the spiritual perspective that protecting nature is a way to protect ourselves.
Mother and child.
Fraught mother-child relationships can impact this tooth.
The Earth Mother is by no means the only tooth archetype with strong mother energy.
Your relationship with your mother is more likely to show up in a tooth on the left than the right,
Particularly Tooth 9,
The Nurturer,
Tooth 18,
Conception,
Or Tooth 12,
Forgiveness.
However,
The Earth Mother archetype is distinguished by its association with the idea of a mother provider or withholder of nourishment and protection.
When Tooth 14 asks for attention,
It may represent an unmet longing for an idealised mother figure who nourishes and protects you.
This tooth can represent your childhood desire for a reliable,
Loving mother who met your exact needs for safety and comfort around food or emotional nourishment.
Real mothers are imperfect,
Messy humans.
Some mothers fail to protect their children,
Whether through a lack of care or a lack of power.
Even being raised by the best of mothers may leave you feeling something missing,
Which later shows up in this too.
The maternal relationship embodied in this tooth is not necessarily with your birth mother though.
It may be a caregiver who was influential when you were young,
Or any adult from whom you absorbed beliefs and habits around eating and or body image.
When the Earth Mother Tooth asks for your attention,
Consider whether there has been a difficult aspect of your relationship with your mother,
Or anyone else who has played a maternal role in your life,
Which still needs to be resolved.
Food-related trauma.
Teeth are very sensitive to malnourishment.
They need minerals,
Protein and fat-soluble vitamins to stay healthy and resilient.
If you've ever had a restricted diet,
Whether by choice,
Culture or circumstances beyond your control,
Teeth can become weak and brittle.
Malnourishment affects teeth,
Whether caused by restrictive diets,
Poverty,
War or disaster.
However,
The Earth Mother Tooth is especially vulnerable to experiences of restricted eating accompanied by emotional trauma.
I sometimes think of this Tooth 14 as the Disordered Eating Tooth because it is so vulnerable to diseases like anorexia,
Bulimia and orthorexia.
This tooth may be holding onto the original,
Underlying energetic or emotional trauma that disordered eating is a response to.
For example,
There may be unreasonable family or social expectations,
Or a lack of safety and a consequent need for control.
This tooth can also carry a legacy of food trauma if you or one or more of your ancestors survived a famine.
The physical damage caused by malnourishment or starvation can affect the DNA passed on to following generations,
Particularly if there is also contemporaneous emotional trauma which remains unresolved.
Tooth 14 has been symptomatic for many of my clients whose parents,
Grandparents or great-grandparents survived one of the 20th century's terrible famines in China,
East Germany,
Or the Soviet Union,
For example.
The last century's famines were accompanied by displacement,
Forced migration,
Death of family members and state-sponsored violence.
During such traumatic events,
People are focused on survival,
Which may have required self-censoring and swallowing expressions of anger,
Grief and fear.
After the worst is over,
Many survivors don't want to speak of or even remember what they witnessed,
Who and what they had lost.
And what they had been forced to do to survive.
Suppressed anger,
Grief and fear can make the physical DNA distortions last longer and go deeper.
These secrets,
Silences and suppressed emotions become embodied not only in your own teeth but in the DNA passed on to the next generations.
Family patterns can exacerbate this DNA damage so that when an individual descendant is particularly targeted with archetypal If Tooth 14 is sensitive,
It may indicate some environmental toxin or irritant which you need to speak up about,
E.
G.
A source of air pollution or noisy neighbours.
To lodge a complaint with the authorities,
Or join a protest,
Or video the problem and share it online.
Or sensitivity with this tooth may be responding to someone in your family who is getting on your nerves,
Particularly a mother figure.
This tooth's sensitivity could be telling you to ask for change or to leave the place where that person is being so annoying.
To help you work out the energetic influence contributing to this tooth's sensitivity,
Track your circumstances every time you feel a sting of discomfort in tooth 14.
Game.
Make a note of what was going on and what you were thinking about in that moment or in the hours before.
Note any feelings about your environment or companions that you did not express.
A cavity is located on this tooth,
You can explore more nuanced interpretations according to Dr Christiane Bayer.
A cavity on the mesial surface,
Which faces the front of the mouth on tooth 14,
May be holding on to pain from food restrictions having been used as a punishment.
This might have been your own experience in childhood,
Or from an ancestor who was perhaps denied a seat at the family table,
Or who was served different or less food than other children.
This part of the tooth may be particularly vulnerable to the collective trauma of a famine,
The family.
Choosing to eat quite differently from the people around you could stop the surface from receiving nourishment.
The messier surface may also hold a fear of being forgotten by your family.
A cavity on the distal surface of the upper left first molar,
Which faces the back of your mouth,
May hold onto your own or ancestral memories of growing up in poverty,
Deprived of good food because of your family's social status.
It may carry an emotional pattern of having low expectations or of trying not to be demanding.
This surface may suffer if you have a habit of eating food you don't actually like so that it isn't wasted.
The distal surface is vulnerable to feeling like your needs will never be met or you can't find a place you really belong.
A cavity on the Earth Mother's occlusal or chewing surface,
Which faces the lower jaw,
Can embody a feeling that mainstream society ignores,
Censors or misinterprets what you have to say.
It can hold your own or ancestral memories of being ignored or constantly criticised by your family.
It may retain collective memories from immigrant ancestors who couldn't speak the language of their new home.
A cavity on the buccal surface,
The side of tooth 14 that faces your cheek,
May be vulnerable if you dislike how you look.
It might carry your own or ancestral memories of feeling judged or rejected by your mother's family for your appearance.
The cervical buccal part of this tooth is the gum line facing the cheek.
That can embody the emotional pain of damage from birth or childhood that affected your appearance you feel excluded or criticised.
It may hold ancestral memories of suffering a disease which left scars.
This surface is vulnerable to having a poor self-image and feeling like you can't be loved or even accepted.
Or if your mother was quarantined with an illness.
Both of these experiences have happened to more than one of my clients who had problems on the lingual surface of tooth 14.
A cavity on the cervical lingual surface,
That's the gum line facing your tongue,
May be influenced by a tendency to ignore your body's needs.
It might carry the hurts of feeling unheard or disdained as a child.
It can hold ancestral memories of being estranged from your family,
Or represent current no-contact relationships.
Abscesses or infections.
If your earth mother tooth is infected,
Inflamed,
Or has an abscess or a cyst,
Consider whether you are internalizing anger about your mother,
The state of the environment,
Or perhaps food issues.
If you have symptoms of fever,
Pus,
Or pain,
They could be telling you that you need to feel,
Express,
And release your anger.
If you feel outraged about pollution,
Animal cruelty or climate change,
Then this is the tooth that may contain any protests that you don't feel safe to voice.
If you are irritable because of a restricted diet,
Tired of body image sexism,
Or when you can't express your frustration directly to a woman in your life,
That suppressed feeling can get stuck in your Earth Mother tooth.
Earth roots usually thrive when you feel stable and grounded in your life.
The roots of tooth 14 may still hold the emotional effects of not having had a secure sense of your place in the natural world when you were young.
The earth mother's roots may be troubled in your adulthood if your childhood was spent mostly inside in a high-rise apartment or moving around a lot.
If you've had a root canal in the Earth Mother tooth,
Look back to the months or years before that procedure,
To when you first noticed symptoms or got a cavity filled on that tooth.
At that time,
Were you feeling insecure about the place where you live?
If your Earth Mother's roots are asking for attention now,
Consider whether your current situation carries some echo of insecurity that you experienced as a child.
Extractions and implants.
If you've lost your upper left first molar,
I suggest you look at the tooth's prior history rather than trying to interpret its current absence.
The archetype may still be activated by the original influences in ways that now affect implants,
Accelerate bone loss or impact adjacent teeth.
The Earth Mother Tooth archetype can be thought of as being like a root system which connects you to sources of all kinds of nourishment.
Having the tooth extracted could be part of a process for healing any of the ways that nourishment had been distorted for you in the past.
Placing an implant could come to represent your commitment to a new way of living in harmony with the natural world.
Gum symptoms.
Tooth archetypes don't only manifest in the teeth,
They can also activate symptoms in the adjacent gum tissue.
Different kinds of gum symptoms may be trying to show you how you are worthy of support.
A gum pocket over the upper left first molar might show up if you've been dishonest about what you eat in a way that has hurt you,
Especially if you've tried to hide disordered eating,
Perhaps even from yourself.
Gingivitis,
Or inflammation which is localised near this tooth,
May be responding to shame related to your body.
Inflammation in the gums might show up if you were abused by a family member and felt like your mother turned a blind eye.
Gingiva may embody the pain of feeling like your sexual identity or behaviour makes you undeserving of support.
The periodontal ligaments around the Earth Mother Tooth may embody the stress of trying to conform with expectations that are at odds with your circadian rhythms,
Or which confine you indoors or require you to sit still or perform repetitive tasks.
Bone loss over the Earth Mother Tooth may be embodying feelings that you lack material support,
For example,
From your mother,
From food,
Or from the local environment.
Now let's explore some ways that you can work with the Earth Mother archetype to support the health and well-being of your upper left first molar,
Or the space where it would be if you don't have one.
If the archetype feels elusive and difficult for you to identify with,
Then your symptoms may be trying to draw your attention to how you have been disconnected from nature,
Your body or your mother.
If the archetypal descriptions above didn't resonate intellectually,
Then tune into your inner Earth Mother as an embodied experience.
The Earth Mother archetype represents your innate strength and healing potential,
That which is most accessible by living in alignment with nature.
It's the integration of your human intellect with your physical body,
Your own true nature.
When the Earth Mother Tooth asks for your attention,
Consider whether your life is disconnected from the seasons.
Try going outside to watch the sunrise or track the moon's phases.
Symptoms may be calling you to go hiking,
Camping,
Forest bathing or wild swimming.
Hag a tree or climb one.
In practice,
This too thrives when you are in cooperative relationships.
Earth Mother doesn't like you to go it alone with the individualism and independence that's so valued in Western white patriarchal culture.
Humble and grounded empathy supports this tooth with quiet work behind the scenes that keeps everything going rather than flagship performative leadership.
Nothing is beneath the attention of the empathetic and cooperative Earth Mother archetype who sees how all forms of life are connected.
She thrives when you fight for animal rights,
Nurture plants,
Or protect soil microorganisms.
Even your own inner microbiome,
The billions of bacteria that inhabit your gut,
Skin,
And mouth,
Are among her children.
The Earth Mother archetype might be drawn to healing and teaching,
But with strong boundaries,
Discipline and focus.
You can support this tooth by strengthening and trusting your inner healer.
It's a tooth that is supported by drinking homegrown herbal infusions.
Consider switching to a more natural toothpaste and toothbrushes.
Research what herbal remedies have been traditionally recommended for your symptoms.
This tooth thrives when you choose to eat fresh,
In-season,
Local food that is minimally processed.
Earth Mother wants you to nourish yourself with an embodied sense of pleasure.
If you know someone else who is struggling with their Earth Mother Tooth,
You can support them by cooking a meal together from scratch,
Starting with what is growing in your garden if you have one,
Or from your local farmer's market.
Choose the most local,
Most peak season ingredients and let them guide your menu and recipe choices.
Cook without digital distractions.
Arrange your food beautifully.
Give thanks to Mother Earth for her bounty.
County.
Then eat slowly,
Paying attention to the flavours and textures of every mouthful.
Think about the vitamins and minerals you are absorbing with gratitude and invite these nutrients to particularly support your teeth and gums.
For yourself,
You could start by using meditation,
Journaling,
Artistic expression,
Or self-healing practices to explore any secrets,
Silences,
Or suppressed emotions affecting Mother Earth themes in your life.
Explore questions like whether you take pride in extreme frugality or restrictive eating.
Whether you have low expectations of having your needs respected by the people around you.
How well you meet your own physical,
Emotional,
Spiritual and psychological needs.
How you experience restoration and relaxation.
And your relationship to femininity and womanhood.
Make space in your life to explore,
Acknowledge and release feelings as you consider these questions.
You can work with tooth archetypes in many ways,
Including somatic therapies,
Talking therapies and spiritual practices.
If journaling is something you find helpful,
Try writing out a detailed description of an imagined celebratory meal with family or friends where you are smiling and laughing,
Speaking without inhibition,
Eating and drinking whatever you want.
Want without a care.
In traditional Chinese medicine,
The earth mother tooth is affected by the spleen and stomach pancreas meridians.
Any meridian based therapy such as acupuncture,
Reflexology,
EFT and so on can support the energy flow to this tooth or the site where the tooth would be.
The meridians associated with the Earth Mother are both Earth elements which are vulnerable to jealousy,
Overthinking,
Anxiety,
Alienation,
Disappointment,
Hunger,
Or greed.
This part of your mouth may absorb people's criticism and unreliability.
It may suffer when you respond to other people with disgust,
Bitterness,
Cynicism or envy.
Positive Earth emotions include confidence,
Harmony and satisfaction.
Here are some suggestions of symbols you can use in ritual,
On altars,
Or in any spiritual or creative practices where you want to represent your Earth Mother archetype to support the number 14 Mola.
Images or objects representing the natural world,
Like crystals or plants.
A picture of an archetypal mother figure or of your own mother or grandmother.
Pottery,
Wood or stone objects from the local indigenous culture which are ethically acquired and used with respect.
A representation of a centaur.
A picture of Demeter,
Papatūānuku,
Or another traditional god or goddess figure that has meaning for you.
The astrological planet of Mercury and the sign of Taurus.
The mineral sulphur.
The tarot card Strength,
And the Queen of Pentacles.
The Earth Mother archetype is supported by spiritual practices like sitting on the ground to meditate,
Making a mandala with leaves or pebbles to celebrate the equinox,
Or any nature rituals in tune with the seasons.
In the beginning,
According to Māori cosmology,
Tradition,
And history,
Papatūānuku,
The Earth Mother,
Emerged from under the water into Te Pou,
The darkness.
There she lay in a tight embrace with Ranginui,
The Sky Father.
They didn't let go of each other,
Even after they started having children,
Who were to become the pantheon of Māori gods and goddesses.
Their offspring were living squeezed between Papatūānuku and Ranginui,
Existing in a state of dark,
Damp discomfort.
As they grew older and more powerful.
The children began to try to push their parents apart.
And eventually succeeded so that the world became flooded with light for the first time.
Te ao Māori mā.
Even after being forced to let go of Ranginui,
Papatūānuku went on having children.
She is the mother of every kind of bird,
Tree,
And insect.
Even the first humans were born from her earth womb.
As descendants of Papatūānuku,
We are all kin.
All living things are children of the Earth and thus interconnected and interdependent on a fundamental level.
This primal connection with all living beings is embodied in the Earth-Mother-Tooth archetype.
Respectful and embodied.
Earth Mother archetype isn't responsive to productivity and performance.
You can nurture your Earth Mother tooth when you take pleasure in experiencing yourself as a physical being interacting with the world.
The Earth Mother archetype is loved and supported when you feel the texture of sand under your bare feet,
Cool water lapping at your ankles and gentle sunshine warming your closed eyelids.
She flourishes when you follow the drifting scent of flowers to bury your face in tender blossoms.
She is nourished when you nibble a freshly picked berry or leaf as you're walking around a garden.
The Earth Mother Archetype can be a valuable partner in your well-being at every stage of the life of your Upper Left First Molar's presence or absence in your mouth.
Your unique healing story about the Earth Mother archetype,
Which reflects your background,
Body and inner life,
Matters more than any descriptions I have shared here.
Trust what your intuition says about this tooth.
Use my ideas and suggestions just as much as is helpful to get started in telling your own unique healing story.
