What Is Nervous System Regulation
In this video, I break down what nervous system regulation actually is, and why it’s completely different from just relaxing or switching off. You’ll learn the basic biology behind your autonomic nervous system, what happens when you get stuck in survival mode, and why so many people feel exhausted even when they’re resting. If you’ve ever felt wired, on edge, or like rest just isn’t working for you, this is a good place to start.

When people hear the word relaxation they often think it means switching off.
Maybe a glass of wine.
Scroll in on your phone.
I was zoning out in front of the TV.
That's not regulation and for a lot of people.
.
.
That's exactly why they still feel wired,
Exhausted or on edge,
Even though they're technically relaxing.
Nervous system regulation is something completely different.
It's about helping your body shift out of survival mode and into a state where you can actually rest.
Where you can think clearly.
And feel safe.
In yourself.
Here's the biology behind it.
You have an autonomic nervous system and it's running in the background all of the time.
It manages things like your heart rate,
Your digestion and your stress response.
Without you even having to think about it.
It has two main modes.
The synthetic state,
Which is often called fight or flight.
It activates when you are under threat or pressure.
Your heart rate rises,
Your muscles tense and your focus narrows.
It's useful.
It keeps you alive.
We then have the parasympathetic state.
Now this is sometimes called rest and digest.
This is where your body repairs,
Recovers and processes.
Where you feel grounded.
Calm and present.
The problem is,
Modern life keeps us stuck in that synthetic activation.
Even when there's no actual threat.
Deadlines,
Notifications,
Conflict,
Chronic stress.
Your nervous system doesn't distinguish between a tiger and a difficult email.
Regulation is the practice of consciously shifting that state.
Using breath.
Movement,
Sound or body-based techniques to send a signal of safety to your nervous system.
So that it can finally come down from high alert.
The more you practice,
The more flexible your nervous system becomes.
You start to recover faster.
You stop getting stuck.
That's what this work is really about.
It's not about escaping your life.
It's about expanding your capacity to meet it.
