We are often carrying significant levels of tension in our bodies and have simply become used to the feeling of it. In preparation for meditation, it is helpful to find ways to help relax your body first. Learning to consciously relax your body can then help relax your mind. This 'Rapid Relaxation' is one method. There are many different techniques to help you to relax, and different techniques can be more or less helpful on different days.

The Rapid Relaxation Practice.

So this rapid relaxation exercise is best done with your body fairly upright.

So just take a moment to adjust your posture and ensure your back is as upright as is comfortable.

Place your feet flat on the floor a little apart and find a comfortable position for your hands.

Probably just resting on your thighs or cupped in your lap.

Notice what works best for you and then when you're ready gently close or lower your eyes.

And I invite you now to take a deep breath in and gently sigh the breath out.

Can you notice a wave of relaxation flowing down your body?

The muscles softening,

Loosening,

Relaxing,

Releasing,

Just simply letting go.

And I invite you to take another breath in again and again sigh the breath out.

And now I invite you to allow your breath to settle.

Just allow it to take up whatever rhythm feels comfortable for you right now.

Quite effortlessly notice the feeling of letting go that little bit more with each out breath.

Just simply letting go.

And I invite you now to begin to move a little.

Just slowly move your torso from side to side in a gentle swaying motion.

Just enough to feel your spine moving across its point of balance.

And as you sway feel the muscles along either side of the spine softening and loosening,

Relaxing and releasing.

And allow the spine to return and rest in its point of balance now.

And again let's take another deeper breath in together and sigh the out breath.

And I invite you now to begin to move your head gently side to side.

Again with the gentle swaying motion.

Just enough to feel your head moving across its point of balance.

And as you gently sway feel the muscles of the neck softening and loosening,

Relaxing and releasing.

And gently return the head to rest in its point of balance.

And again let's take another deeper breath in and then sigh the out breath together.

Just simply letting go.

And I invite you now to move your head a little from front to back.

Feel the ease of the movement almost like your head is a helium balloon just floating there and your neck like a string gently holding it in place.

Again allow the head to return and rest in its point of balance quite effortlessly.

Feel the ease of it all just simply letting go.

And I invite you to sit quietly for as long as you choose and when you're ready gently allow your eyes to open and go on your way.

Thank you.
