Veliona (Latvian Velu Mate) was the goddess of the dead. In the town of Veliuona, a church was built on top of a famous temple that was dedicated to the goddess Veliona. Veliona is a Chthonic goddess, she is seen as a goddess who guards over the underwater world, streams, caves, waters, and soil (but she should not be confused with the earth goddess Zemyna).

Hello,

Loyalty people!

It is Nina.

You are watching FairyTuber channel.

Continuing my series on Baltic Mythologies.

So,

I am not a Baltic person myself.

I am a Finn.

But Finnish mythology is part of the Finno-Baltic mythological family.

So,

I am very interested in all Baltic mythology as well.

And today we are talking about a goddess who we don't have much information about.

And this is Lithuanian goddess of death.

Her name is Veriona.

And it is believed that her name is derived from a Baltic word Beles.

And Beles was a corpse in Baltic language.

It probably has the same origin as Old English word Veil.

Which means a corpse in a battlefield,

Possibly.

And Veriona,

There isn't much information about her written down.

And we don't know much about her.

In Lithuania there is a town called Veriona.

There is a church there and a temple dedicated to this goddess of death.

And Veriona was not just a goddess of death who ruled the underworld.

Well,

She did do that as well,

But she also ruled the riches of the underworld.

Very much the same as Pluton in Roman mythology.

She was also a god of the dead,

But also a god of the diamonds and gold underground.

So Veriona,

She has similar task.

She is the goddess of all the riches,

Supplies,

Underground,

All the minerals and the metals there.

However,

We don't know much about Veriona and her purpose,

What it was when she was worshipped in pagan times.

And there is also lots of Indo-European influences in these mythologies of Veriona.

One is that she was protector of death and she was protector of those warriors who died in the battlefield.

Usually this meant that ancient Lithuanians who were protecting their country from Christian invaders.

So when they died,

Veriona would pick them from the battlefield to underground.

So there is connection with German Valkyries there.

And all these goddesses would pick soldiers from the battlefield after they have been killed there.

Protecting their country or their religion or whatever it is that they have been protecting.

There isn't much information about Veriona.

People did sacrifice male roosters,

Pigs and goats for her.

And they had these massive sacrifice parties to honor Veriona.

And honority did in that sense.

Honority passed away relatives and those people who have died in the battlefield.

So this is the story of Veriona.

Thank you for watching guys and I will see you on my next video.

Especially with veteran's day coming up, was interesting to learn about her. I want to say with respect and kindness that your accent was so strong that I missed a lot of your teaching.
