Hi there,

My name is Meg Sanghimino and I'm here to offer small accessible tips to help you build and grow your yoga practice From the comfort of your home.

I'm a yoga teacher mentor coffee lover and dog mom Welcome to episode 2 today.

We're going to talk about Expectations so expectations for our yoga practice at home.

This is a big one in the last episode We talked about setting up your space setting up good boundaries and setting yourself up for success in your yoga practice Today we're going to talk about expectations the expectations that we take onto our yoga mat with us That hinder us from having a fulfilling yoga practice in our home Right.

So when you step into a yoga studio and I talked about this on the last episode You have all these boundaries set up for you,

Right?

You're in the space for 60 to 75 minutes You're not bringing your cell phone There's other students in the room.

So you feel accountable to do,

You know,

Most of the poses It's a different dynamic than being at home So I want you to take a moment and reflect on what expectations you have for your yoga practice that are possibly keeping you From having a sustainable and fluid yoga practice Some examples might be that you expect to feel amazing every time you get onto your yoga mat you expect to get a good workout in if You're not on your yoga mat for more than 30 40 minutes.

You feel like it's just not worth it Do any of these things resonate with you today Today we're gonna go a little bit deeper Ask yourself.

What expectations do I bring onto my yoga mat with me?

You can even pull out your journal write some of them down Start to brainstorm ways To work through them And I'm gonna offer you a couple ways that I work through expectations In my own personal yoga practice.

So when I first started doing yoga at home back when I was a college student and I couldn't afford to pay for a yoga studio membership I Decided that the biggest expectation I had Was that I had to be on my yoga mat for at least 60 minutes,

Right?

Because that's what it looks like in a yoga studio So I started to slowly chip away at that expectation I would get onto my yoga mat just in short spurts whenever I had time ten minutes here five minutes here 15 minutes here and just kind of move in a way that feels good,

You know,

Just not worrying about being symmetrical Not worrying about doing the same poses on one side as the other not worrying about doing anything that my body doesn't feel like doing And this was really uncomfortable for me at first right because I was used to being led through a yoga practice in a studio setting I was used to getting a good workout in doing poses that maybe were uncomfortable for me And I shouldn't have been doing it all in the first place So getting onto my mat for just a few minutes here and there and moving in a way that felt intuitive to me Was uncomfortable for me But like I always say nothing grows in your comfort zone and it allowed me to grow this beautiful and sustainable yoga practice But just like anything in this life our yoga practice can sometimes feel stale and uninspiring and I recently hit a span of time where I didn't feel inspired to get onto my yoga mat at all and these Meditations for my yoga practice started to pop up again.

So If you feel like this is more what you're struggling with.

I'm going to encourage you to explore different aspects of your yoga practice And I offer this in my virtual studio Because I think it's so important.

I don't just offer guided yoga videos I also offer my students meditations Meditations rituals for the full moon for the new moon journal prompts different parts of your yoga practice that aren't necessarily the physical postures or the asana practice and This can help you reconnect with yourself in different ways It allows you to build a three-dimensional yoga practice instead of just focusing on the downward dogs and the warrior twos So I want you to really think about this concept of expectations.

What expectations are you dragging onto your yoga mat with you That you have to do a certain number of chaturangas that you have to be on your yoga mat for 60 minutes How can you start to work through these Maybe bring your morning coffee onto your yoga mat in the morning and just take a few deep breaths Maybe you just lay in shavasana for 20 minutes or do a relaxing meditation Just like everything in this world it's important to try to stay Detached so that you can grow and learn and not stay stagnant in the routines that you've always followed I hope this was helpful for you today I hope you took something out of this if you want to check out my virtual studio It's on Meg sin jamino calm and you'll get a little bit more insight into what I mean when I say That we the goal here is to build a three-dimensional yoga practice in order to become sustainable at home I Will see you back here next time for the next episode,

And I hope you have a wonderful day
