Beginning slowly and slowing down.
Finding rest,
Getting ready to experience a little bit of peace,
Some respite.
Setting appropriate expectations.
You're not gonna clear your head.
The world won't go away.
You can put it aside for a little while.
Let yourself be bored.
Let yourself be inactive.
Give yourself the gift of that time.
But your mind isn't gonna go blank.
That would be deadly.
And then just settling in,
Enjoying your seat,
Enjoying the place where you find yourself.
Listening.
Birds,
Cars,
Mechanical noises,
Breezes.
Your ears can be a good cue to stay present.
You can even listen to my voice as a cue.
What do you hear?
What do you notice?
What are you participating in or just witnessing?
Settling down,
Becoming more still,
A little more quiet.
Slower and slower and slower.
Having fun with this.
This is a meditation on making your heart and body lighter.
So start with a lightheartedness.
You don't have to take yourself too seriously to do this meditation or really any meditation.
Maybe you let yourself smile a little because life is good even with all its distresses,
All its pain and suffering.
And even evil.
Life has moments of true goodness and joy.
This could be one of them.
And moving outside in,
You were listening and now you're gonna go inward and notice your breath.
You're breathing in deeply and out slowly,
Just slowing down the breath.
Extending it more deeply so it helps your body open.
Gives you oxygen,
Slows you down.
Even breath has weight.
All of those molecules filling you up.
Inhaling deeply,
Exhaling slowly,
Just slowing down,
Getting quiet.
Enjoying being quiet.
Enjoying an escape from the restlessness and the agitation.
A moment to yourself.
A moment of giving unto yourself.
Maybe you pause and say a little prayer for all the people who don't have this time to give to themselves.
Maybe you even dedicate this meditation to them.
For those not in the room.
Where do you feel weight and heaviness in your body and your spirit?
What's weighing you down?
Maybe your muscles or shoulders are sore from carrying groceries or other things.
Maybe you're a little worn out from exercise or a poor night's sleep.
Maybe it's the weight of expectation.
The heaviness of a job.
The weight of worry for family and loved ones.
Physical,
Mental,
Spiritual weights on us because we are strong and usually can carry some of them.
For some time.
Breathe into the places you feel heavy.
Could be muscle soreness,
Tension,
Could be anxiety.
Just breathe into it,
Acknowledge it.
Social awkwardness.
All those things are very normal and common and understandable.
Maybe a yawn,
Maybe a stretch,
Maybe another deep breath in,
Slow breath out.
Whatever you need right now.
Can you imagine the weight as an embodied thing,
A thing you could see?
A block,
Perhaps,
A brick,
A box.
Something like that.
Kettlebell,
I suppose,
Would work.
Maybe it rests on your left shoulder or on your back or over your head.
The way sub-Saharan peoples carry weight on the roof of their head.
Breathe into it,
Feel the heaviness.
Maybe not immensity,
But weight,
Density.
Notice the effort you put into carrying.
Muscle tension.
Spiritual alertness.
The emotional diligence you put into being ready.
It's a little exhausting.
Breathe into self and notice where you carry all those things and all of the effort you put in.
Just notice,
Don't judge.
Accept it's normal.
You're doing the right thing.
You're probably helping others.
And set the box down,
Set the brick and the weight down.
Set it all down.
Letting go of it for the moment,
At least for the duration of this meditation.
You can get it later.
Maybe it'll even be lighter next time.
Can you feel your spirit start to lift and lighten?
Your heart that was heavy,
Maybe has a little bit less weight resting on it.
Growing up and out like a balloon,
Like a hot air balloon,
Like a helium balloon.
Becoming more weightless.
Letting your spirit,
Heart,
Soul drift,
Untethered and unencumbered for a few moments.
Continuing to breathe,
Continuing to set down your burdens and grow lighter,
Dissipate,
Disappear,
Drift,
Levitate and float.
Blessings.
Blessings.
