Your thoughts won't stop tonight.
You know the feeling.
You lie down and close your eyes and your mind just keeps going,
Replaying the day,
Jumping to tomorrow and solving problems that don't need solving right now.
You are not doing anything wrong,
Your mind is doing exactly what it's trained to do.
Stay alert,
Stay ready and keep processing.
The problem is that nobody told it the day is over.
So that's what we're going to do right now.
Don't fight your thoughts,
Don't force your mind to go blank,
Just gently let it know that it can stop now,
That you are safe,
That there is nothing left to figure out tonight.
Start by taking a slow breath in through your nose and a long exhale through your mouth.
Now feel where you are,
The surface beneath you holding you completely,
All of it supported.
You don't have to hold yourself up right now,
You can give that job to the bed.
Let your body get a little heavier with each exhale,
More settled.
Now your thoughts are probably still moving,
That's okay,
Don't try to stop them.
Instead,
Imagine you're sitting beside a river and your thoughts are the water,
Just passing through,
You're just watching it from the bank.
A thought comes,
You see it,
You don't grab it,
You notice it,
You don't follow it.
You don't have to engage with any of it,
You don't have to solve anything,
Finish anything or figure anything out.
Those thoughts are just the river doing what rivers do,
Moving and you're just watching from the bank,
Still,
Quiet.
Take a breath in and now bring your attention to your body for a moment.
Let it soften,
Let them drop,
Your chest,
With every exhale a little more open.
Let your palms rest open,
Soft,
Rising and falling on its own,
Still.
And here is something important to understand about your mind tonight.
The reason your thoughts won't stop is not because something is wrong with you,
It's because your nervous system hasn't received the signal that it's safe to rest.
It's still scanning,
Still ready,
Waiting for the next thing.
So we're going to send that signal now that it's safe to rest,
Very simply.
Say this to yourself,
Silently,
As you exhale.
I am safe.
And as you breathe out.
I am safe.
Breathe in.
I'm safe.
Not as an affirmation you're trying to believe,
Just as information you're giving your nervous system.
A simple signal,
The day is done.
You're safe right here,
Right now.
In this body,
Allow your thoughts to keep moving if they want to.
You don't need to stop them.
Just keep returning to the riverbank,
Watching,
Letting it all pass.
Your only job right now is to be here in this body,
In this breath,
On this bank,
Watching the river move.
You don't need to fall asleep.
Just stay here,
Soft and still.
Let your nervous system do what it knows how to do,
When you finally give it permission.
And now.
The river is slowing,
Now.
The thoughts are getting quieter.
Because you stopped feeding them.
Let your eyes stay soft behind your eyelids.
Let your whole face relax.
Let your body sink just a little deeper.
You are safe.
You're done for today.
