You have done enough today.
I want you to really hear that,
Not as a consolation,
Not as something to say to make you feel better,
But as a fact.
Whatever you did today,
Whatever you handled,
Whatever you pushed through,
Whatever you didn't finish,
It's done.
The day is closed,
And right now,
The most important thing you can do is exactly this.
Stop and rest.
So let's start with your breath.
Don't try to change it,
Just notice it.
Feel your chest rise slightly as you breathe in,
And fall as you breathe out.
That's all you need to do right now.
Your body already knows how to breathe.
It's been doing it all day without your help.
You can trust it to keep going while you rest.
Now feel the weight of your body,
Your head heavy against the pillow,
Your shoulders sinking down,
Your back,
Your hips,
Your legs,
All of it being held,
Completely supported.
You don't have to hold yourself up anymore.
There's something your body has been carrying all day that most people never notice.
A low level readiness,
A subtle bracing,
Like part of you has been waiting,
Waiting for the next thing to handle,
The next problem to solve,
The next moment that needs your attention.
That part of you has been working hard,
And it did its job.
But there's nothing left to handle tonight,
No next thing coming,
No problem that needs solving right now.
You can stand down,
And take a slow breath in,
And as you breathe out imagine that readiness softening,
That low level bracing just releasing.
Not because you're giving up,
But because the job is done.
Breathe in again,
Gently,
And out,
Letting your whole body become a little heavier,
A little more settled,
And bring your attention to your face,
And your forehead,
And the space between your eyebrows.
So many people carry the day there,
In a subtle tightness,
A quiet tension they don't even notice until it's gone.
Let it go now,
Let your forehead smooth,
Let the space around your eyes soften,
Your jaw,
Your mouth,
Let your teeth part slightly if it feels natural,
Let your tongue rest,
Your throat soft,
Your chest,
With every exhale,
A little more open,
A little less guarded,
Your belly,
You've been holding it in all day,
Consciously or not,
Let it go,
Let it be soft,
Let it rise and fall freely with each breath,
Uncurl your fingers if they're closed,
Let your palms face up or down,
Whatever feels natural,
Let them be completely still,
Your legs heavy,
Warm,
Going nowhere,
All the way to your toes,
Releasing,
Now take a moment to feel your whole body at once,
Still,
Held,
This is what your body has been waiting for all day,
Not sleep exactly,
Though sleep will come,
Just this,
Permission to stop,
Permission to be completely still without needing to do anything about it,
Your mind might still be moving,
Thoughts coming through,
Things from today,
Things about tomorrow,
That's okay,
You don't need to stop them,
You don't need to clear your mind,
Just let the thoughts move through like weather,
You don't need to follow them,
You don't have to push them away,
They're just passing through,
You are not your thoughts right now,
You are this body,
This breath,
This stillness,
Breathing slowly,
Nothing you need to figure out tonight,
Nothing you need to resolve,
Whatever is unfinished will still be there tomorrow,
And tomorrow you'll be more rested,
More clear,
More capable of handling it,
The best thing you can do right now for yourself,
For everyone around you,
For everything you care about is rest,
Rest fully,
Completely,
You've earned this,
Let your body be heavy now,
Let your mind drift,
Let sleep find you in its own time,
You don't need to make it happen,
Just stay here,
In this warmth,
Settled,
And let yourself be done for the day.
