You are safe right now.
I know that might sound simple,
Maybe even too simple,
But for a nervous system that's been on alert all day,
Managing,
Anticipating,
Responding,
Those four words are exactly what it needs to hear.
You're safe right now.
Nothing is coming,
There's no threat,
No emergency,
No problem that needs your attention in the next few hours.
Whatever is unresolved in your life will still be there tomorrow,
And tomorrow you'll be more rested,
More clear,
More capable of handling it.
So right now in this moment,
In this body,
In this bed,
You are safe.
Let's start there.
Take a slow breath in,
And a long exhale out,
And out,
Let your body soften just slightly with that exhale.
Your nervous system has two modes.
One is alert,
Scanning,
Ready,
Braced for what might come next,
And the other is rest,
Open,
Settled,
Safe.
Most people spend their entire day in the first mode,
And then they lie down at night and wonder why their body won't switch off.
It's not a character flaw,
It's not anxiety disorder,
It's just a system that never received the signal to calm down.
So,
We're going to send that signal now,
Gently,
Together.
Feel the weight of your head against the pillow,
Really feel it.
The pressure,
The warmth,
The solidity of something holding you.
Your head is heavy,
And it's held.
Feel your shoulders,
Are they lifted slightly?
Braced,
Let them drop down,
Just a little,
Just enough to feel the difference.
Let them sink down and back.
Your chest,
With every exhale,
Let it soften,
Let it open.
You don't need to guard anything right now.
Your belly,
Soft,
Rising and falling on its own without your help.
Your legs,
Heavy,
Warm,
Still.
Now,
Take a slow breath in,
And as you exhale,
Imagine your whole body sending a message downward,
From your head,
Through your chest,
Your belly,
A wave of release.
Now,
I want you to notice something.
Right now,
In this exact moment,
Is there anything actually threatening you?
Not in general.
Right now,
In this room,
In this body,
Most likely,
You are physically safe,
Warm,
Supported,
With nothing actually requiring your protection right now.
So,
Let your nervous system receive that information.
You are safe.
Breathe in slowly,
And out.
You are safe.
You are safe.
As a fact,
Your body can feel right now.
The warmth is real,
The stillness is real,
And you are here,
Inside all of it,
With nothing to brace for.
Let your face relax completely,
Your forehead,
The space between your eyebrows,
Your jaw,
Let it go,
Soft,
Your throat,
All of it releasing,
Your hands,
Open,
Palms,
Soft.
Heavy,
Warm,
Held.
If thoughts come,
Let them.
You don't need to engage.
You don't need to solve.
Just notice them moving through like clouds,
And return your attention here,
To this body,
This breath,
This safety.
And breathe in.
Your nervous system is listening right now,
What it's hearing,
In your slow breath,
In your softening body.
And this stillness is exactly the signal it's been waiting for all day.
It's okay to rest now.
It's safe to let go.
You don't need to stay alert anymore.
Breathe in one more time,
Slowly and deeply.
And as you breathe out,
Let everything go,
The day,
The thoughts.
