Hi,
My name is Therese.
And today I want to talk about nervous system regulation,
Because it's a phrase that is everywhere right now,
Yet many people aren't exactly sure what it means.
Your nervous system is your body's communication network.
It's constantly scanning your environment and asking one simple question.
Am I safe right now?
When your nervous system senses safety,
It's easier to think clearly.
Sleep well.
Focus.
Connect with others,
And make decisions from a more grounded place.
When it senses threat,
Whether that may be a difficult conversation,
Financial stress,
A busy schedule.
Lack of sleep,
Or even constant notifications on your phone.
That's when your body can shift into survival mode.
So you might notice symptoms like racing thoughts.
Irritability.
Difficulty sleeping,
Maybe feeling overwhelmed.
Trouble concentrating or constantly feeling on edge.
Nervous system regulation isn't about being calm all the time.
It's more about the ability to develop a return to balance after feeling stressed.
So think of it like driving a car.
Sometimes you need the gas pedal and sometimes you need the brakes.
A healthy nervous system can move between both when needed.
So problems often arise when we're stuck with our foot on the gas too long.
But the good news is that regulation doesn't have to be complicated.
There are simple practices that can help signal safety to your brain and body,
Including.
.
.
Slow,
Steady breathing.
Gentle movement,
Yoga,
Meditation.
Spending time in nature.
Meaningful connections with others,
And taking moments throughout the day to pause and notice what you're feeling.
So let's try something together right now.
Take a slow,
Deep breath in through your nose.
And a longer breath out through your mouth.
Again,
Deep inhale.
Longer exhale through your mouth.
Notice what happens when we give the body permission to slow down.
That small shift is an example of nervous system regulation.
So it's not about becoming a different person.
It's about helping your body remember that it doesn't have to stay in survival mode all the time.
Thank you for being here and I hope this helped you better understand what nervous system regulation is.
And why it matters.
