What Is Shadow-Work? (And What Exactly Is 'The Shadow'?)
by Corin Bryant
You may have heard the term 'shadow work' before and wondered what this phrase is referring to. In this video, I give a brief explanation of what shadow work is and why the Shadow is called that. 'Shadow' is an often misunderstood term. The word 'shadow' sounds ominous and negative, but upon inspection, we find the Shadow is simply the areas of our psyche the light of consciousness doesn't reach. I also include a little bit about why this is a powerful practice for our continued emotional healing. I believe shadow work is nothing to be afraid of and suitable for people at all stages of their healing. Please note that this practice is not a replacement for professional therapy or medical care. The quote at the end is by Carl Jung: "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." In this video, I am speaking from the perspectives of secular mindfulness, cognitive behavioral approaches, Jungian psychology, and Kashmir Shaivism.
