Tantra: Making Love with Life

with Carrie Grossman

When you hear the word “tantra”, what comes to mind? If you’re like most people, chances are you associate it with sex. After all, this is how Tantra is often marketed in the West—but the true beauty of the tradition has little to do with that. Much more than a sexual practice, Tantra is a diverse and subtle system of esoteric wisdom with many different sects and streams. While physical intimacy does have a place in certain lineages, it’s always used in the service of enlightenment—and oftentimes it’s purely metaphorical. Ultimately, Tantra isn’t just about making love with another person, but making love with life itself. While it’s easy to speak about Tantra as a single philosophy, in truth, it can’t be reduced to one thing. The actual word refers to a body of texts known as “tantras”—but it also means “web” or “loom”, as Tantra weaves the threads of matter and spirit together. Tantric wisdom says that 'this world' is sacred, and that our humanity can be a vehicle for awakening. Unlike some spiritual paths, Tantra doesn’t reject the body but rather sees it as a temple for the Divine—a holy place where all the mysteries of creation abide. At a time when so many of us have become divorced from the sacredness of our body and the sacredness of the earth, Tantra offers an ancient medicine that can help to heal this rift. Tantra says that we are so much more than a lump of flesh with untamed thoughts and messy emotions. Instead, we are embodiments of pure consciousness (Shiva) and cosmic energy (Shakti). As we begin to tap these forces that are our birthright, we kindle our inner power and light. In this workshop, you will learn about the history and philosophy of Tantra, as well as some of the most common practices, including mantra, yantra, mudrā (hand gestures), nyāsa, (body consecration), diksha (initiation), and puja (ritual). You will also learn how Tantra’s life-affirming worldview can help you see yourself and your relationships through new eyes. Over three hours, you will receive inspired teachings and tools that you can integrate into your daily life—and come away with a deeper understanding of this vast and beautiful tradition. Note: Traditionally, Tantric teachings were passed down in secret from guru to disciple, so the fact that we can learn about them today is a privilege. Given the nature of the tradition, this workshop will not “teach” Tantra, but rather offer an introduction to this profound subject through ancient wisdom, stories, and simple, accessible practices. All are welcome. Due to differences in time zones, we understand that not everyone will be able to join the session live. But that doesn’t mean you need to miss out. You can still purchase the workshop and the recordings will be sent to you after the session.
