Our minds can be a powerful instrument to help us cope with a child who's misusing drugs or alcohol.

It's not always easy to think positive thoughts.

So having a meditation practice and focusing on these affirmations is a way to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts.

When you repeat them often and believe in them,

You can start to make positive changes.

So allow yourself to start your day on a positive vibration before the world seeps in.

Allow yourself this time to be present.

There's nothing to figure out right now.

Settle into a place where you'll be open to receiving these affirmations with grace and loving acceptance.

Close your eyes and find yourself in a peaceful place where you feel safe and supported.

Awaken a space inside of you that sees your child at an age and place where they're healthy,

Happy,

Smiling,

And at peace,

Whether that's now,

In the past,

Or a future version of them.

Listen to the following affirmations and repeat them out loud or silently,

Whichever feels right to you.

Today I will remember I didn't cause this to happen.

I can't fix my child,

But I can influence them.

I'm a good parent going through a bad time.

I'm the only one who can give my child a healthy parent.

I have empathy and show kindness to my child.

I'll take care of myself today so I can be better for my child.

I use self-awareness to make better decisions.

When things get heated,

I step away and breathe before responding.

I don't react with emotions that can be damaging.

I'm a positive role model for how I'd like my child to live and treat themselves.

I vent my anger and frustration in a healthy way,

Not on my child or partner.

I can untangle myself from my child's problems and let them learn to solve their own.

When I'm tempted to blame or criticize,

I breathe and do something for myself instead.

I find gratitude for the positive things in my life.

I'm a better parent when I'm rested and feel good about myself.

When I want to give up,

I find someone strong to lean on.

Discouragement is normal,

But it doesn't have to overcome me.

This is a part of my world today,

But it doesn't define who I am as a person.

I know more today than I did yesterday.

It's okay to let my child struggle to solve their own problems.

Sometimes,

The best thing I can do for my child is rest.

I'm doing the very best I know how.

Now find the words that touched your heart most deeply.

Why did they stir you?

Repeat that affirmation now,

Knowing it may be the hardest one for you to believe.

As you imprint these words and thoughts into your heart and mind,

Your brain will create new paths for them to travel,

New places for your heart to search,

New experiences for you to live.

As these affirmations become home to you,

You'll find yourself responding rather than reacting.

Empathy will answer where anger used to.

Caring for yourself will feel like giving rather than taking.

You will soak in hope and not despair.

Give yourself another moment to relish in the hushed presence of yourself,

This pre-dawn serenity,

Knowing you'll carry these words of affirmation with you in your heart space and into your day.

Let them feed and nourish you through all that may come today until you rest your head tonight.
