“I was born in Cape Town in 1990. My earliest memories are of safari holidays with my family. My dad would drive us proudly in his 4×4 through Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia, his childhood home. Mandela became President when I was four years old; I don’t have a specific memory, just that everyone around me seemed happy.
2020 was the loneliest year of my life. I watched my Dad die over Zoom. He was home in Franschhoek and I was stuck on the other side of the world in Sydney, unable to get back. Covid has taken so much from so many; from me it took my dad and my sanity; not being able to hug my mother and brother hurt in places I didn’t know existed. It will be one year in September since he left. He was 68, larger than life, and devoted to me. I was his girl. I don’t know where he is now but I hope I will see him again one day. I miss him beyond words.
I spent my childhood walking around Africa with a camera, dreaming of becoming a famous photographer. I studied Art direction & Advertising in Cape Town, followed by a post grad in Entrepreneurship. Afterwards I spent four years crisscrossing the Atlantic on super yachts working as a crew member. Serving others takes quiet inner fortitude; you meet all sorts in the rarefied world of the super rich. Exhausted, I flew to Bali in 2016 for a wellness retreat where I met Insight Timer’s CEO, Christopher Plowman. He had just purchased the app with his brother Nicholas. They needed someone to run social media so I took the biggest risk of my life and joined Insight Timer two weeks later.
In the last six years I’ve built our Publishing team, our Customer Support team, and more recently, our Communications team. Trust, autonomy and kindness are three things I love most about Insight Timer. Joining the company turned me into an adult; I am part of something greater and I get to give back. The management team is family. We love and support each other and I cherish the fact that the women have as much say as the men.
It’s been two years since I saw my Mum. I don’t know when I will see her again, but when I do, we will mourn my Dad together. And our family will plan new beginnings”.
