When you start a sport like golf or tennis, there is a progression of mastery you can follow - of deeper skill, craft, and enjoyment - all throughout the rest of your life. What is the progression of mastery for meditation? This next series of sessions will lay out a powerful, lifelong path for non-religious meditators, using the motif of the "two birds" we have shared earlier in this series. When most people learn meditation,

They typically learn it as a one-off kind of exercise.

They'll learn how to recite a mantra,

Or they'll learn a mindfulness technique,

Or a breathing exercise,

Or even use a guided meditation audio or video.

And then that'll be about it,

And there will be nothing that follows that.

And what's often missing from the picture is a framework for then integrating meditation into your everyday life over the course of years or even decades.

And this is a really important missing piece because even in any other activity,

Even in sports like say,

You know,

Golf or tennis,

There is a progression of mastery.

In other words,

After the first time you swing a golf club or hit a tennis ball,

That's not the end,

Right?

There is more that you can do.

There is more that you can progress to.

There is a progression.

And with golf or tennis,

You don't have to join a religion.

You don't have to be spiritual.

You just play because it's fun.

And it's fun to get better and better at it over the years.

So my question is,

Why can't that be the same with meditation?

Say you meditate for the first time and it's great.

So then what do you do?

What is the progression of mastery with the meditative arts?

How do you make it a part of your life as its own thing,

Regardless of religion or spirituality?

Now,

This is a bit of a different way of thinking about meditation,

Namely outside of the realms of the religious or the spiritual.

And it's something that I've been interested in for a long time.

And now that you've gone through the Preside training series,

And you've learned your first few launch exercises,

And your first few drift exercises,

And been introduced to monkey mind and the two birds imagery,

You may be thinking,

Well,

Now what next?

And in the next video,

I will lay out what the progression of mastery for Preside meditation is.

And I'll just tell you upfront that it is a path you are now,

Because of your training,

Perfectly well equipped to travel on your own,

With or without my continued guidance.

And I want to congratulate you on this.

And also thank you for coming along with me on this journey.

And I'm totally looking forward to hearing about all of your experiences with meditation going forward.

And also along the progression of mastery as you travel it.

So when you're ready to go,

I will see you in the next video.
