Hi there and welcome back to Insight Timer.
I'm Stephen,
Your guide for this practice.
Before we dive into our inquiry,
Let's simply arrive.
Find a position that feels both supported and present.
Allow your shoulders to drop away from your ears,
And if it feels safe and comfortable,
Go ahead and gently rest your eyes,
Or soften your gaze toward the floor.
Take one deep intentional breath in,
And a slow sighing breath out.
I want to offer you a question.
It's a simple question on the surface,
But perhaps a deeply layered one once we sit with it.
What do you hear when you turn inward?
When you move from the world of doing into the world of being,
What is the first thing that greets you?
Perhaps you hear the rhythm of your physical life.
Can you hear the soft brush of your breath against your throat?
Can you hear the steady,
Quiet pulse of your own heartbeat?
Maybe,
For some,
This sort of internal listening can feel uncomfortable.
It can feel heavy,
Weighted.
You might sense restlessness,
Or even the silence can feel loud.
Can you let that be okay?
Sometimes we turn inward and we feel a sense of insufficiency.
We think we should be hearing profound wisdom,
Or finding total peace,
And when we don't,
We feel we missed the mark.
But I want you to consider this.
Sitting with yourself exactly as you are is a profound act of compassion.
When you listen,
You aren't listening like a judge passing a sentence.
You're listening like a companion,
Like an observer,
Simply curious.
What is the weather of the soul?
Can you hear your breath,
The gentle movement,
Air in and out?
A rhythm that's always there,
Supporting you.
Can you hear your presence?
The simple fact that you are here,
In this moment,
In this body.
Can you hear your heartbeat,
The steady pulse beneath the surface,
The evidence of your aliveness?
Is it okay to hear nothing?
Absolutely.
Is it okay to feel not enough?
Can you simply be with the one who is listening?
And as we spend these final moments together,
Ask yourself what's needed?
What's wanted?
What's present?
Can you allow what you hear or don't hear to be enough?
Without a need or an impulse to respond,
To fix,
To do anything about it,
Can you just let it be heard?
You're here,
Breathing,
Listening,
Being.
Gently begin to bring your awareness back to your environment,
To your own presence as a being.
Wiggle your fingers,
Feel the weight of your body in its posture on our earth.
When you're ready,
Welcome yourself back.
Thank you for turning inward with me today.
Thank you for practicing listening inward.
I hope to practice with you again soon.
