Bring yourself to a comfortable place of ease.
You may or may not want something over your eyes.
You can do this practice with your eyes open and let your gaze to be soft if that is the case.
If you feel or you think that you might fall asleep,
You know what,
That's okay.
If you need the rest,
You need the rest.
I have found sometimes by saying to myself,
I am practicing yoga nidra,
I am awake for yoga nidra,
I am practicing yoga nidra,
That might help you stay connected to that alertness.
But don't worry if that doesn't happen.
Somewhere in your deep subconscious you'll hear the words that I'm saying as well.
We have that time now to make sure that we are super duper,
5% more comfortable.
Feather the nest and settle down.
Make sure you're warm.
And then when you get there,
Take a nice long,
Slow,
Full deep breath in.
And as you breathe out through the mouth,
Settle down a bit more.
So we're going to do that two more times,
Breathing in.
And as you exhale,
If you even want to make the sound of the universal sound of rest.
And then one more time breathing in.
And let the breath come back to an everyday rhythm where you're breathing in and out naturally through the nose.
Become aware of the weight of the body where you lie.
The back of the head,
The back,
The back of the arms connected to the ground or the bed.
Or parts of the hands rest in connection with the ground,
With the earth.
The back of the pelvis,
Then through the legs,
The weight,
The heaviness of the legs resting.
And then those two parts of the body,
The body is resting on the heels of the feet.
Notice where that connection is.
So the whole body,
The whole body is settling down,
The whole body cradling into the earth a little bit more.
Even notice your form,
The form that the earth is supporting you,
Holding you up.
And then bring to mind two things,
Two new things that you are grateful for.
We are at the time of the full moon.
And this is the time when we give gratitude,
Where we give thanks.
It's a time to celebrate,
To dance,
To offer forgiveness.
So bring to mind two new things that you are grateful for at this time.
And then one thing that you are grateful to let go of.
One thing that you are grateful to let go of.
So we bring the attention now back to the breath.
Without changing anything too much to begin with,
Can you notice the breath in and the breath out,
The body breathing itself,
Where that movement is.
It's the chest,
The belly,
Or boat.
Perhaps it's the whisper of air in and out through the nostrils.
And in your own time begin to lengthen and deepen this breath gently and slowly,
Lengthening and deepening the breath.
And beginning a count of your breath.
And if you could let this inhale and exhale be of an equal count as if you were breathing in for four,
Breathe out for four.
If you're breathing in for five,
Breathe out for five.
Come to a comfortable count that suits you.
Take your time going at your own pace,
But allow your inhale and your exhale to be of an equal count for a few moments.
We let go of that breath practice,
Allowing the breath again come back to its everyday rhythm.
And bring to mind now your sankalpa,
Your intention and affirmation,
A positive statement.
Maybe it's a question.
Repeat it mentally three times.
I am practicing yoga nidra.
I am practicing yoga nidra.
And yoga nidra is the practice of awareness.
And with this awareness,
We're going to take a little trip around the map of the body.
And today's practice is in honor of this full moon.
So as if our body was the dark velvet cosmos,
And each part of the body that's named,
If you like placing a little blue starlight or a twinkling star on each part that is mentioned so that the whole body will eventually be illuminated.
And we begin with the right hand thumb.
So allowing a blue starlight or twinkling star to rest on the right hand thumb.
And then another one comes to rest with our focus on our awareness on the index finger and then the middle finger and then the fourth finger and then the little finger.
And then all the fingers on the right hand and the thumb are twinkling.
And a twinkling star lands at the back of the hand,
The palm of the hand,
And then on the wrist,
The elbow,
The shoulder,
The right armpit,
The right side of the chest,
The left side,
Sorry,
The right side of the waist.
And then the right hip,
Thigh,
A twinkling star or bright starlight on the knee,
On the ankle,
On the top of the foot,
The sole of the foot,
The instep of the foot,
The right big toe,
Second toe,
Third toe,
Fourth toe,
Fifth toe.
And then all the toes are twinkling,
Twinkling stars on all the toes on the right foot.
And then the awareness comes over to the left hand thumb and a bright starlight lands on the left hand thumb.
And then the index finger,
Middle finger,
Fourth finger,
Little finger,
Back of the hand,
Palm of the hand,
All the fingers and thumb twinkling with starlight.
The starlight then lands on the wrist,
The elbow,
The shoulder,
The armpit,
The left side of the chest,
Left side of the waist,
Left hip,
Thigh,
Knee,
Ankle,
Top of the left foot,
Sole of the left foot,
The instep of the left foot.
And then a star shines brightly on the left big toe and then another one on the second toe,
Third toe,
Fourth toe,
Fifth toe.
So all the toes on the left foot and there's sparkling.
Then the awareness comes to the back of the heels,
Two stars,
One on each heel,
The backs of the knees,
The buttocks,
The back of the pelvis.
At the lower back,
The middle back and then the upper back.
And then a star twinkles brightly at the right shoulder blade,
The left shoulder blade and then the back of the head,
The crown of the head over to the left ear,
The right ear,
Left eyebrow,
Right eyebrow,
Left eyelid,
Right eyelid,
Left nostril,
Right nostril,
The tip of the nose,
Top lip,
Bottom lip,
The chin.
All the awareness now into the left leg,
The left leg twinkling,
The whole of the left leg and then the right leg,
The whole of the right leg twinkling on both legs together.
And then the whole of the left arm twinkling,
The whole of the right arm twinkling,
Both arms together.
The whole of the left side of the body,
The whole of the right side of the body,
The whole body,
The head,
The ears,
The eyebrows,
The whole body twinkling in this dark velvet sky of the cosmos.
All these bright shining stars twinkling,
Illuminating.
The whole body is illuminated.
And then how would it be to let your attention,
Your focus come to the crown of the head?
And imagine here the new moon or the dark moon just at the crown of the head.
And then the awareness comes down to the eyebrows and we can let a crescent moon rest here.
And then we come to the throat,
Placing a half moon at the throat.
And then down to the center of the chest,
The heart center,
And here we invite a full moon,
The full luminous bright silver light of the full moon.
And then down at the navel,
Placing a half moon again here at the navel,
At the sacrum or the sacral chakra area,
A crescent moon.
And then down at the tailbone,
We place a dark moon again or a new moon.
With the focus then coming back up to the center of the chest,
The heart center,
Allowing the awareness to rest at the full moon while the body is twinkling,
Filled with stars.
The whole body is twinkling.
This night sky shining,
Luminous,
Bright.
And then release the moons and the stars into the sky,
Into the universe,
Into the cosmos,
Remembering that we too are made of stars,
Beings of light.
The whole body is resting.
The whole body is resting.
Rest and harmony and peace,
Filling your entire being,
Resting the whole body resting.
With awareness to the breath and to the body as you breathe in the next time as if you were breathing from the left side of the body,
The whole left side of the body,
Bringing that breath up to the center of the eyebrows.
And as you breathe out,
Breathing out the right side of the body,
All the way out the right side of the body and then breathing in the right side of the body,
Gathering that breath up to the center of the eyebrows and as you exhale from the center of the eyebrows out down the left side of the body,
Breathing in the left side,
Center of the eyebrows,
Breathing out the right side,
Breathing in the right side to the center of the eyebrows,
Breathing out the left side,
Continue with that breath for a few more rounds.
And then how would it be breathing in through both sides,
The whole of the body,
Breathing out both sides,
The whole of the body,
Breathing in the whole body,
Breathing out the whole body,
Breathing in the whole body,
Breathing out the whole body,
Doing this for a couple more rounds,
Letting the awareness then come to the chitta cache of that area behind the forehead,
The mind's eye,
Or inner wisdom or intuition lies,
Noticing anything that comes to the forefront here and don't worry if nothing does,
It's all good,
The whole body is resting.
Remember that you are welcome however you are,
You are welcome just as you are.
We leave a little bit of space for that intuitive wisdom or that inner wisdom to come forth if it wants,
On mind the time.
So as we begin to maybe gently welcome ourselves back,
Bringing to mind your samkalpa if you made one at the beginning of the practice,
Your intention,
Affirmation or positive statement,
And repeating that mentally three times.
As we bring this practice of yoga nidra to its completion,
If you are using this to rest and continue with your sleep,
Simply roll over,
Change position,
Come back to sleep,
Come back to deep rest,
If you know that you have to move to get on with the rest of the day or the evening,
Doing it as mindfully and as slowly as you can,
Welcoming in the sounds first,
Welcoming in a sense of smell the next time that you breathe in,
Welcoming in a sense of taste the next time that you swallow,
And perhaps a little bit of movement into fingers and toes,
With this little stretch that needs to be had,
Giving a little stretch.
This practice of yoga nidra is now complete.
This practice of yoga nidra is now complete.
