I heard this really interesting concept recently called a windwalk,
And I loved it.
The idea is really simple.
You go for a walk and you look for winds.
That's it.
You actively look for things that are going right in your life and in the world around you.
And I know this might sound really obvious,
But think about how often we do the opposite.
We go for a walk thinking about what's not working in our life.
Things that we need to sort out,
Or the messages we haven't replied to,
Or the thing we're worried about.
And meanwhile,
There's an entire world happening around us that we barely notice.
So I tried it.
I went on a walk with this one little mission.
To find wins.
And suddenly there were so many.
The sunshine,
Someone laughing,
A dog having the best day of its life,
The sound of birds,
A really good coffee.
The fact that my body was carrying me somewhere.
Small things,
But also not small things.
Then I started looking for the winds in my own life.
Things that had gone well recently.
Things that I'd handled better than I would have a year ago.
Something I finally did and finished.
And something that I used to wish for.
Was now a part of my everyday life.
And that one really got me because I think we can be so focused on looking ahead that we forget to notice when we've actually arrived somewhere we once hoped to be.
There's some really interesting science behind this too.
Research around positive emotions suggests that when we're feeling more positive,
Our attention and our thinking can become broader,
We become more open,
We notice more and we see more possibilities.
And I love that.
Because maybe looking for wins doesn't just make us feel good because we found something nice.
Maybe it changes what we're more available to see,
It shifts our perception,
Our framing.
So I invite you to try this out.
The next time you go for a walk,
Make it a wind walk.
Look for something beautiful or funny.
Look for something you'd usually walk straight past without even noticing.
Look for things that make you think that's really nice.
And then look a little closer at your own life.
What things have you done recently that deserve more credit?
What have you learned?
What have you changed?
What's working?
What used to be a dream that you've become so used to you barely notice it anymore?
Keep looking and see how many winds you can find before you get home.
Because at the end of the wind walk,
Your life might be exactly the same,
But you might see it differently.
And sometimes that's where the magic is,
Not by changing anything drastically,
Just by finally noticing the things that are going right.
