A Poem For Creative Wobbles

You know that feeling when your creative confidence collapses and you end up spiralling into self-doubt? If the answer is yes, then this poem is for you! I wrote this poem after a real-life creative wobble when someone's comment sent me spiralling. What saved me was a wise friend who reminded me that criticism often reveals more about the critic than about us.

It was a wobbly kind of day today,

And not in a jelly kind of way,

But more in a way where I lost my base,

Was in that does it even matter space,

Where one small comment took me out,

Flung me to the stratosphere of self-doubt,

Where I wondered,

Do I know me at all?

I felt insignificant,

Pathetic,

Small.

Reaching out to a friend,

Warning I may cry,

Began to tell them the reasons why it was all so pointless,

My act of giving,

How I should be earning a proper living.

And she said,

Yeah.

I hear that,

Mate.

I hear that you're in quite a state,

But I'm not sure that comment's true.

I'm not sure they're seeing you.

For when someone starts to be judgmental,

You may find that it's an accidental passing off of their own dejection,

Which they project for their protection.

And I said,

Yeah,

Okay.

That explanation is a damn sight better than myself,

Damnation.

And the moral of the story is clear.

Take note of those you hold dear.

For there'll be many comments that come your way and leave you in a wobbly way.

But listen to people in your inner sphere.

Take note of those who hold you dear.
