Hello and welcome.
I'm so glad you're here.
Now,
I want to start by saying something directly.
If you've found this video,
There's a good chance you're feeling lonely.
And I want you to know before we do anything else,
That loneliness is one of the most universal human experiences there is.
It visits everyone.
The most connected people you know,
The most confident,
The most loved.
It doesn't discriminate and it doesn't mean something is wrong with you.
What we're going to do today comes from the Buddhist tradition.
It's a practice called Metta,
Which translates as loving kindness.
It's one of the oldest and most widely practiced meditations in the world,
And modern science has caught up with what Buddhist teachers have known for centuries.
That deliberately cultivating warmth and compassion,
Beginning with yourself and expanding outward,
Genuinely changes how connected we feel to the world around us.
Here's the thing about loneliness that Metta understands.
We so often wait for connection to come from the outside,
For someone to reach in and make us feel less alone.
And sometimes that happens.
But Metta begins somewhere else entirely.
It begins with you,
With the warmth you are capable of generating right now in this moment for yourself first,
And then for others.
You don't need to feel it straight away.
You just need to be willing to try.
That's enough.
So find somewhere comfortable.
Close your eyes if that feels right And let's begin.
So I want you just to take a breath in through the nose.
And a long slow exhale through the mouth.
Let that body settle.
And again.
Inhale.
And exhale.
Let any effort go with that breath.
Now,
Bring your attention gently to the area around your heart.
Not forcing anything,
Just resting your awareness there.
And if it helps,
Place one hand lightly on your chest.
We're going to work with four simple phrases.
You'll hear them from me,
And I want you to repeat them silently to yourself as we go.
Now don't worry about whether you feel them immediately,
Just offer them,
Like planting seeds.
The feeling follows the intention,
Not the other way around.
Now we begin with ourselves,
Because you cannot pour warmth outward from an empty place.
So breathing gently and silently repeating after me.
May I be happy.
May I be healthy.
May I be safe.
May I be at peace.
And again slowly.
May I be happy.
May I be healthy.
May I be safe.
May I be at peace.
Notice whatever arises.
There's no right response.
Some people feel warmth immediately.
Some feel resistance,
A voice that says they don't deserve this.
If that happens,
Just notice it gently and offer the phrases again anyway.
This is the practice.
So again,
Repeat after me.
May I be happy.
May I be healthy.
May I be safe.
May I be at peace.
Just rest for a moment and let that settle.
Now bring to mind someone you love easily,
A person whose face makes you smile,
A friend,
A family member,
Perhaps even a pet.
Let their image of their feeling arise naturally.
And now direct the same warmth toward them.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May you be safe.
May you be at peace.
And again.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May you be safe.
May you be at peace.
And let that settle.
Feel how naturally that warmth flows when we direct it towards someone we love.
That warmth,
That capacity.
It lives in you.
It came from you.
It is yours.
So now,
Let's expand it further.
Bring to mind someone neutral,
Someone you neither love nor dislike.
A neighbour you passed but don't know.
Someone you saw today on the street.
A total stranger.
And offer them for saints.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May you be safe.
May you be at peace.
And let that settle for a moment.
Okay,
Now this is the most powerful part of the practice.
Let the warmth expand outward in every direction,
Beyond the people you know.
Beyond your street,
Your city,
Your country.
To every person sitting somewhere right now feeling exactly what you feel.
Lonely,
Disconnected.
Wondering if anyone understands.
There are millions of them right now in this moment.
All of us together in our separateness.
So to all of them,
To all of us.
Repeat after me.
May we be happy.
May we be healthy.
May we be safe.
May we be at peace.
Let that settle for a few moments and just breathe naturally.
Just rest here.
Feel the subtle but real shift from the smallness of loneliness to the vastness of shared human experience.
You are not separate from life.
You are woven into it.
Always.
Always have been.
So just sit with that for a little moment.
You Okay,
Now when you're ready.
Gently open your eyes.
The Buddha taught that loving-kindness is not a feeling we wait to receive.
It is a capacity we cultivate,
Like a muscle,
Like a garden.
The more we tend to it,
The more naturally it grows.
You began today with yourself.
That was the most important step,
Because a person who can offer genuine warmth to themselves,
Even imperfectly,
Even on a difficult day,
Has something real to offer the world.
Now,
You are not alone.
You never were.
Much Love!
Take care of yourself.
And I'll see you soon.
