This guided meditation is a way to explore "should" and how it can impact our mental and emotional well-being. It gently acknowledges the well-meaning roots of “should,” while creating space to recognize when it becomes a source of pressure, guilt, or burnout. Through mindful breathing and reflection, listeners are invited to release unhelpful “shoulds” and reconnect with presence, self-compassion, and inner clarity.

Welcome to this guided meditation,

Placing a particular focus on the notion of should.

Though sometimes well-intentioned,

Should tends to create a subtle sense of failure within us.

It pulls us out of the present moment and into a mental tug-of-war between who we are and who we think we ought to be.

Over time,

This constant measuring can lead to anxiety,

Guilt,

Burnout,

And a chronic feeling of never quite being enough.

This meditation invites you to gently step back from the pressure of should,

To examine where it comes from,

And to reconnect with what's real,

Kind,

And true in this moment.

Let's begin by settling in.

Find a comfortable position,

Seated or lying down,

And allow your body to feel supported by the surface beneath you.

Gently close your eyes if that feels comfortable.

Let's take a deep breath in together,

And a long,

Slow breath out.

Let's do that again.

Inhale deeply,

And exhale,

Softening the jaw,

The shoulders,

The belly.

Now,

Bring to mind the word should.

It's a word that visits many of us,

Often daily.

I should be doing more.

I should be working harder.

I should already be there,

Wherever there is.

Take a moment to notice what arises in your body when you hear those words.

Do your shoulders tense?

Does your chest tighten?

Do your brows furrow?

Does your mind begin to race?

Should often enters our minds wearing a mask of helpfulness.

It may come from a desire to improve,

To grow,

To be responsible.

In its best form,

Should tries to steer us toward health,

Success,

Or integrity,

And it's okay to acknowledge that.

But sometimes,

Even with good intentions,

Should turns into pressure.

It becomes a silent critic,

Whispering that this moment isn't enough,

That you aren't enough.

Take a slow breath in,

And a long breath out.

Ask yourself now,

With kindness,

Are the shoulds I carry helping me,

Or are they keeping me stuck in stress,

Self-judgment,

Or burnout?

There's no need to force an answer.

Just listen.

Now,

Imagine each should as a small stone you've been carrying in a bag.

Each one tied to productivity,

Perfection,

Or performance.

I should have finished that project.

I should be more focused.

I should be further along.

With every exhale,

Imagine setting one stone down.

No need to toss them or reject them completely.

Just give yourself permission to pause and to rest from carrying them for a while.

In this moment,

There is nothing you need to fix,

Nothing you need to prove.

You are not behind.

You are not failing.

You are here.

Breathe in.

I am doing my best.

Breathe out.

This moment is enough.

Now,

Begin to gently shift the language from I should to I choose to,

From I should have to I'm learning to,

From I should be more to I already am.

Feel how these shifts land in the body.

Notice the softening.

Let go of the pressure to always be productive.

Let go of the idea that your worth is measured in output.

You are not a machine.

You are a living,

Breathing human being deserving of rest,

Care,

And compassion.

Take a few more deep breaths.

With each inhale,

Invite gentleness in.

With each exhale,

Release another should that no longer serves you.

And if some shoulds remain because they feel aligned or motivating,

That's okay.

You don't have to discard them all.

Just carry them with awareness,

Not obligation.

Now,

Begin to return to your surroundings.

Wiggle your fingers and toes.

Let your breath deepen.

And when you're ready,

Slowly open your eyes.

You can revisit this practice any time the voice of should becomes too loud.

Remember,

You are enough,

Even when you pause.
